Role Context
The Consultant - Reconstructive Ophthalmology will diagnose and manage patients with complex ophthalmic, orbital, eyelid, lacrimal, and periocular conditions requiring functional or reconstructive intervention. The role combines specialist ophthalmology assessment, advanced oculoplastic surgical planning, trauma reconstruction, postoperative care, and multidisciplinary collaboration. The consultant will help strengthen reconstructive ophthalmology services in Dubai through surgical precision, evidence-based care, clear patient counselling, and coordinated work with ENT, maxillofacial, plastic surgery, oncology, and eye care teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage ophthalmic, orbital, eyelid, lacrimal, and periocular disorders requiring reconstructive or oculoplastic intervention.
* Perform reconstructive ophthalmic surgeries, including eyelid reconstruction, lacrimal procedures, orbital surgery, trauma reconstruction, and functional eyelid surgery.
* Evaluate and treat patients with orbital diseases, eyelid malpositions, eyelid tumors, facial trauma, tear drainage disorders, and complex periocular deformities.
* Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient ophthalmology consultations for patients requiring specialist oculoplastic or reconstructive care.
* Develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical examination, imaging findings, functional needs, cosmetic considerations, and patient safety priorities.
* Manage pre-operative assessment, surgical planning, informed consent, postoperative follow-up, wound care, and complication prevention.
* Collaborate with ENT, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, oncology, radiology, anesthesia, nursing, and multidisciplinary teams for complex reconstructive cases.
* Provide patient and family counselling regarding diagnosis, surgical options, expected outcomes, procedural risks, recovery timelines, and postoperative care.
* Maintain accurate medical records, including consultation notes, imaging reviews, operative reports, consent forms, discharge summaries, and follow-up documentation.
* Ensure clinical practice follows DHA standards, hospital policies, surgical safety protocols, infection control requirements, and evidence-based ophthalmology guidelines.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, research activity, case reviews, continuing medical education, and departmental learning programs.
* Support a patient-centered care environment focused on visual function, facial integrity, comfort, confidentiality, and long-term clinical outcomes.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification or fellowship in Ophthalmology with subspecialty training in Oculoplastic or Reconstructive Ophthalmology.
* Valid DHA Consultant License or Eligibility Letter in Ophthalmology.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-specialist experience in reconstructive ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery.
* Strong expertise in eyelid reconstruction, lacrimal surgery, orbital procedures, functional eyelid surgery, trauma reconstruction, and complex periocular case management.
* Experience in tertiary eye care, academic medical centers, or advanced ophthalmology services is preferred.
* Exposure to complex orbital and facial reconstructive surgeries is an advantage.
* Research, teaching, audit, or academic experience is valuable.
* Excellent communication, surgical planning, patient counselling, clinical documentation, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a multicultural healthcare environment with patients from diverse backgrounds.
