Role
The Consultant - Reconstructive Ophthalmology will provide expert medical and surgical care for patients with ophthalmic, orbital, eyelid, lacrimal, periocular, and facial conditions requiring reconstructive or oculoplastic intervention. The position involves detailed diagnosis, advanced surgical planning, outpatient and inpatient consultation, post-operative care, patient counselling, and close collaboration with ENT, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, oncology, radiology, anesthesia, nursing, and multidisciplinary teams. The consultant will help strengthen reconstructive ophthalmology services in Dubai by improving function, appearance, comfort, vision-related outcomes, and long-term quality of life for patients with complex eye and facial disorders.
Core Duties
* Diagnose and manage ophthalmic, orbital, eyelid, lacrimal, and periocular disorders requiring reconstructive ophthalmology or oculoplastic intervention.
* Perform reconstructive ophthalmic surgeries including eyelid reconstruction, functional eyelid surgery, lacrimal surgery, orbital procedures, trauma reconstruction, and periocular defect repair.
* Evaluate and manage patients with orbital diseases, eyelid malpositions, tumors, facial trauma, tear drainage disorders, periocular lesions, and complex functional eye concerns.
* Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient ophthalmology consultations for patients requiring medical, surgical, or multidisciplinary reconstructive care.
* Develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical examination, imaging results, visual function, surgical risk, patient goals, and long-term recovery needs.
* Collaborate with ENT, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, oncology, radiology, anesthesia, pathology, nursing, and allied healthcare teams for complex reconstructive cases.
* Manage post-operative recovery, wound care, complication prevention, surgical follow-up, and long-term functional or cosmetic outcomes.
* Counsel patients and families regarding diagnosis, surgical options, procedure risks, expected recovery, post-operative care, and follow-up requirements.
* Maintain accurate patient records, including consultation notes, imaging interpretation, operative reports, consent forms, treatment plans, and discharge summaries.
* Ensure compliance with UAE healthcare regulations, hospital policies, patient safety standards, infection control protocols, and clinical governance requirements.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, research activities, case reviews, and continuous medical education programs.
* Support teaching and mentoring for junior doctors, trainees, nurses, and clinical team members involved in ophthalmology and reconstructive care.
* Stay current with advances in oculoplastic surgery, reconstructive ophthalmology, orbital surgery, lacrimal procedures, trauma reconstruction, and patient safety practices.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent recognized qualification in Ophthalmology.
* Subspecialty training in Oculoplastic Surgery or Reconstructive Ophthalmology.
* Valid UAE Consultant license or eligibility for consultant-level ophthalmology practice.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-specialist experience in reconstructive ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery.
* Strong expertise in advanced reconstructive ophthalmic, orbital, lacrimal, eyelid, and periocular surgical procedures.
* Experience in tertiary eye care or academic medical centers will be an advantage.
* Exposure to complex orbital disease, facial trauma, eyelid tumors, tear drainage disorders, and facial reconstructive surgeries.
* Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural healthcare environment.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex surgical plans clearly to patients and families.
* Research, teaching, audit, and academic development experience will be valued.
