Role Context
The Consultant - Rehabilitation Medicine will provide expert evaluation and treatment for patients recovering from injury, illness, surgery, neurological disease, chronic disability, and functional decline. The role has strong clinical impact because rehabilitation medicine requires accurate assessment, goal-based planning, coordinated therapy input, patient motivation, and long-term outcome tracking. Working with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, rehabilitation nurses, and other specialists, the consultant will help patients regain mobility, improve daily function, reduce complications, and return to the highest possible level of independence.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct comprehensive assessments for patients with physical impairments, musculoskeletal injuries, neurological conditions, post-surgical limitations, chronic pain, neuromuscular disorders, and functional disabilities.
* Develop individualized rehabilitation plans focused on mobility restoration, functional independence, pain reduction, strength improvement, adaptive strategies, and long-term recovery goals.
* Lead rehabilitation programs using evidence-based physical medicine approaches, clinical assessment findings, patient priorities, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
* Utilize and guide therapeutic modalities such as exercise therapy, manual therapy coordination, electrotherapy, assistive devices, gait training, functional training, and adaptive equipment planning.
* Collaborate with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, rehabilitation nurses, orthotists, prosthetists, and other healthcare professionals.
* Monitor patient progress through functional measures, clinical reviews, therapy feedback, mobility assessments, pain scores, and rehabilitation outcome indicators.
* Adjust treatment plans when required to improve recovery, address barriers, prevent complications, and support realistic patient-centered goals.
* Provide education to patients and families on injury prevention, safe mobility, functional adaptation, home exercise, assistive device use, long-term wellness, and prevention of recurrence.
* Participate in case conferences, interdisciplinary rounds, care-planning meetings, discharge planning, and complex rehabilitation discussions.
* Support patients with chronic conditions by creating long-term management strategies that promote independence, safety, community participation, and improved quality of life.
* Ensure rehabilitation services follow clinical governance standards, evidence-based protocols, patient safety requirements, and applicable healthcare regulations.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, rehabilitation goals, progress notes, care plans, functional assessments, discharge summaries, and follow-up recommendations.
* Contribute to departmental development, service improvement initiatives, staff training, patient pathway enhancement, and quality review activities.
* Stay updated with advancements in rehabilitation medicine, assistive technology, neurorehabilitation, musculoskeletal care, pain rehabilitation, and functional recovery techniques.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from an accredited medical institution.
* Board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
* Minimum 5 years of post-certification experience, preferably in a hospital, tertiary care facility, or specialized rehabilitation center.
* Strong knowledge of current rehabilitation technologies, treatment techniques, assistive devices, therapeutic modalities, and evidence-based rehabilitation protocols.
* Proven ability to assess and manage patients with musculoskeletal injuries, neurological conditions, neuromuscular disorders, disability, chronic pain, and functional limitations.
* Experience leading multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams and coordinating patient-centered recovery plans.
* Strong understanding of mobility restoration, functional independence, adaptive strategies, discharge planning, and long-term rehabilitation outcomes.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, and patient-counselling skills.
* Ability to work effectively with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, rehabilitation nurses, patients, and families.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language skills are an advantage.
