Role Context
The Consultant Sports Medicine Physician will provide specialist care for athletes and physically active individuals experiencing acute injuries, overuse conditions, musculoskeletal pain, concussion, and performance-related health concerns. The role combines diagnostic assessment, image-guided treatment, rehabilitation oversight, fitness evaluation, injury prevention, and return-to-sport decision-making. Working alongside orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, rehabilitation physicians, radiologists, nutritionists, and sports scientists, the consultant will help patients recover safely while reducing reinjury risk and supporting long-term physical performance.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage acute and chronic sports-related injuries affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other musculoskeletal structures.
* Conduct detailed clinical examinations, functional assessments, movement evaluations, and sport-specific fitness screening.
* Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnosis, activity level, performance demands, and recovery goals.
* Coordinate rehabilitation programs for athletes recovering from injury, surgery, overuse syndromes, or prolonged inactivity.
* Make evidence-based return-to-play and return-to-training decisions using clinical findings and functional recovery criteria.
* Assess and manage sports-related concussion and coordinate graduated return-to-activity protocols.
* Perform therapeutic injections where clinically indicated.
* Conduct ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal procedures within the consultant\'s scope of expertise.
* Use musculoskeletal ultrasound to support diagnosis, treatment planning, and procedural accuracy.
* Manage non-surgical orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions using evidence-based sports medicine approaches.
* Identify biomechanical, training, conditioning, and lifestyle factors contributing to recurrent injury.
* Develop injury prevention strategies tailored to individual athletes, teams, and sporting disciplines.
* Collaborate with orthopedic surgeons regarding injuries that may require operative intervention.
* Coordinate closely with physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists to align medical treatment with functional recovery goals.
* Review radiological imaging with radiologists and integrate findings into clinical management.
* Work with nutritionists and sports scientists when performance, recovery, body composition, or training factors affect patient care.
* Support elite athletes and professional sports teams with injury assessment, medical decision-making, and rehabilitation oversight where required.
* Educate athletes and coaches regarding injury prevention, load management, recovery strategies, and safe participation.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, procedural records, rehabilitation plans, and return-to-play documentation.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews, clinical governance meetings, audits, and quality improvement programs.
* Contribute to research, continuing medical education, sports medicine teaching, and development of clinical protocols.
* Mentor junior physicians, physiotherapists, and allied health professionals where appropriate.
* Maintain practice standards aligned with patient safety, professional regulations, accreditation requirements, and evidence-based sports medicine.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Completion of an approved residency training program.
* Fellowship or Board Certification in Sports Medicine or Sport and Exercise Medicine.
* Physicians trained in Family Medicine with a Sports Medicine Fellowship may also be considered.
* Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialists with recognized Sports Medicine subspecialty training may also be suitable.
* Minimum 5 years of post-board or post-fellowship consultant-level experience in Sports Medicine.
* Appropriate UAE consultant licensing or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Strong expertise in sports injuries, musculoskeletal medicine, rehabilitation, and non-surgical treatment.
* Experience managing elite athletes, professional sports teams, or highly active populations is preferred.
* Advanced experience in musculoskeletal ultrasound is highly desirable.
* Practical competence in ultrasound-guided injections and other image-guided sports medicine procedures is advantageous.
* Strong understanding of concussion management and return-to-play protocols.
* Demonstrated ability to coordinate complex rehabilitation across multiple disciplines.
* Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making skills in high-performance sporting environments.
* Strong communication abilities when working with athletes, families, coaches, and multidisciplinary professionals.
* Leadership, teaching, and mentoring experience is desirable.
