Role Context
The Consultant Surgeon - Pediatric Cardiac provides expert surgical care for young patients with congenital and acquired heart conditions. The role involves complex operative decision-making, precise surgical execution, ICU collaboration, family communication, and ongoing involvement in patient recovery and long-term clinical outcomes.
This position has strong clinical value within a tertiary pediatric cardiac program, where timely surgery, multidisciplinary planning, and high-quality post-operative management directly influence survival, recovery, and quality of life. The consultant will also support service advancement through teaching, audits, research, and continuous professional development.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgeries, including open-heart procedures, congenital heart defect corrections, valve repairs, and advanced cardiac surgical interventions.
* Provide detailed pre-operative assessment, surgical planning, risk evaluation, and optimization for infants, children, and adolescents with cardiac conditions.
* Manage post-operative care in coordination with ICU teams, including hemodynamic support, recovery monitoring, complication prevention, and long-term follow-up planning.
* Collaborate with pediatric cardiologists, anesthesiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, and allied health professionals to ensure integrated patient care.
* Participate in emergency surgical interventions and on-call rotations for urgent pediatric cardiac cases.
* Review diagnostic findings, imaging results, catheterization data, echocardiography reports, and multidisciplinary recommendations to guide surgical planning.
* Support families with clear communication regarding diagnosis, procedure options, surgical risks, expected recovery, and follow-up needs.
* Supervise and mentor junior doctors, residents, fellows, and clinical team members involved in pediatric cardiac surgery services.
* Contribute to departmental research, case reviews, clinical audits, surgical outcome tracking, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Maintain accurate medical records, operative reports, consent documentation, progress notes, and discharge planning in accordance with hospital policies.
* Follow international standards for surgical safety, infection control, patient confidentiality, clinical governance, and ethical medical practice.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD or equivalent with specialization in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
* Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery from a recognized institution.
* Board certification such as American Board, FRCS, Arab Board, or equivalent.
* Minimum 5-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Proven track record of successful surgical outcomes in high-volume pediatric cardiac centers.
* Strong expertise in congenital heart disease surgery, open-heart procedures, valve repair, perioperative cardiac care, and pediatric ICU coordination.
* Prior GCC experience is preferred.
* Active DHA license or eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant licensure is preferred.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language skills are an advantage.
* Strong leadership, communication, teaching, clinical documentation, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
