Role Context
The Consultant Surgeon - Pediatric Cardiac provides specialized surgical management for children with congenital and acquired heart conditions. The role includes complex operative care, perioperative decision-making, emergency surgical support, multidisciplinary case planning, and contribution to high-quality pediatric cardiac outcomes.
This position is critical within a tertiary cardiac center because pediatric heart surgery requires precise planning, rapid response, close ICU coordination, and strong collaboration across cardiology, anesthesia, intensive care, perfusion, nursing, and rehabilitation teams. The consultant will also contribute to research, audits, teaching, quality improvement, and academic development within the pediatric cardiac service.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgeries, including congenital heart defect repairs, neonatal cardiac procedures, redo cardiac surgery, and advanced operative interventions for high-risk cases.
* Manage perioperative care for pediatric cardiac patients in close collaboration with pediatric cardiology, anesthesia, intensive care, perfusion, nursing, and allied clinical teams.
* Participate in surgical planning for complex congenital heart disease cases, using diagnostic findings, imaging results, catheterization data, risk factors, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
* Provide emergency surgical intervention for critically ill pediatric cardiac patients requiring urgent operative care.
* Work closely with pediatric cardiologists in diagnostic review, treatment selection, timing of surgery, and therapeutic decision-making.
* Support patients requiring ECMO or mechanical circulatory support where clinically indicated and available.
* Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, residents, and surgical trainees involved in pediatric cardiac surgery services.
* Ensure adherence to surgical safety standards, infection control requirements, clinical governance frameworks, and quality protocols.
* Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences, case discussions, morbidity and mortality reviews, and complex surgical planning meetings.
* Contribute to clinical research, audits, publications, academic activity, and continuous improvement within pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative reports, consent documentation, progress records, and follow-up plans in line with DHA requirements and hospital policies.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent specialist qualification in Cardiothoracic Surgery with subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
* Active DHA Consultant License or eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant licensure.
* Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Strong expertise in neonatal cardiac surgery, complex congenital heart defect repair, redo cardiac procedures, and high-risk pediatric cardiac surgical care.
* Experience in high-volume pediatric cardiac centers is preferred.
* Exposure to ECMO, mechanical circulatory support programs, academic activity, research, or surgical publications is an advantage.
* Excellent surgical judgment, leadership ability, clinical communication, family counselling, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a high-acuity tertiary care environment with strong attention to patient safety and surgical outcomes.
