Role Context
The Consultant Surgeon - Pediatric Surgery will deliver advanced surgical care for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents requiring elective, emergency, neonatal, trauma, and complex surgical intervention. This role has high clinical importance because pediatric surgical patients require accurate diagnosis, age-specific operative planning, close perioperative coordination, and careful family communication. Working within a multidisciplinary pediatric environment, the consultant will help improve surgical safety, recovery outcomes, neonatal emergency response, and long-term quality of life for young patients.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage a wide range of pediatric surgical conditions including congenital anomalies, abdominal disorders, thoracic conditions, tumors, trauma, and complex acquired diseases.
* Perform elective and emergency pediatric surgical procedures with strong attention to patient safety, operative precision, and age-appropriate clinical care.
* Manage neonatal surgical cases including congenital malformations, intestinal obstruction, abdominal wall defects, thoracic emergencies, and other complex neonatal presentations.
* Provide inpatient and outpatient consultations for pediatric surgical patients requiring assessment, follow-up, second opinion, or operative planning.
* Develop individualized preoperative and postoperative management plans based on diagnosis, age, clinical risk, imaging findings, recovery needs, and family circumstances.
* Participate in emergency surgical coverage and pediatric trauma care, including urgent evaluation, stabilization, operative decision-making, and multidisciplinary coordination.
* Collaborate closely with neonatology, pediatric ICU, anesthesia, radiology, nursing teams, pediatric subspecialists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Support minimally invasive pediatric surgery pathways where clinically appropriate and aligned with available facilities and patient needs.
* Educate families on diagnosis, surgical options, expected outcomes, procedure risks, postoperative care, warning signs, and follow-up requirements.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative reports, consent records, discharge plans, and clinical documentation in line with DOH Abu Dhabi regulations and hospital policies.
* Participate in clinical audits, research projects, teaching activities, morbidity and mortality reviews, and continuing medical education programs.
* Maintain high standards of infection control, surgical quality, patient safety, ethical practice, and evidence-based pediatric surgical care.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by DOH Abu Dhabi.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent specialist qualification in Pediatric Surgery.
* Valid DOH Consultant License or Eligibility Letter in Pediatric Surgery is required for the actual work location.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in a tertiary care or academic hospital.
* Strong expertise in neonatal surgery, complex pediatric surgical procedures, congenital anomalies, pediatric trauma, abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery, and emergency pediatric care.
* Experience in minimally invasive pediatric surgery is an advantage.
* Exposure to pediatric trauma services and neonatal intensive care surgical collaboration is preferred.
* Academic, research, audit, or teaching experience is an added advantage.
* Excellent surgical judgment with the ability to manage complex cases in high-pressure clinical situations.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to explain sensitive surgical matters clearly to families and multidisciplinary teams.
* Able to work effectively in a multicultural healthcare environment with professionalism, empathy, and clinical discipline.
