Role Context
The Consultant - Transplant Critical Care provides expert ICU leadership for critically ill liver and kidney transplant patients who require complex perioperative monitoring, advanced life support, and rapid clinical decision-making. The role involves managing unstable transplant candidates, supporting post-operative recovery, preventing complications, and coordinating care across multiple specialist teams.
This position has direct impact on transplant survival, organ function, patient safety, ICU efficiency, and long-term recovery outcomes. The consultant will support clinical governance, staff training, transplant-related research, quality improvement, and continuous development of critical care standards within a high-performance healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead ICU care for critically ill transplant patients, including pre-operative optimization, intra-operative support coordination, and post-operative critical care management.
* Manage liver and kidney transplant patients requiring advanced monitoring, hemodynamic support, mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, vasoactive medications, sedation, and organ-support strategies.
* Collaborate with transplant surgeons, nephrologists, hepatologists, anesthetists, intensivists, emergency physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Perform and supervise advanced critical care procedures, including invasive monitoring, airway management, ventilator support, central venous access, arterial lines, and renal replacement therapy support.
* Provide clinical consultations across critical care areas, emergency services, transplant units, and high-dependency settings.
* Develop individualized ICU treatment plans based on transplant status, organ function, infection risk, hemodynamic condition, laboratory results, imaging, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
* Support early identification and management of transplant-related complications, including graft dysfunction, sepsis, bleeding, rejection concerns, renal instability, respiratory failure, and multi-organ dysfunction.
* Ensure compliance with DHA regulations, international ICU standards, transplant care protocols, infection control, patient safety requirements, and ethical clinical practice.
* Participate in on-call coverage for transplant and critical care emergencies requiring senior consultant input.
* Mentor junior physicians, ICU residents, fellows, nurses, and clinical staff in transplant critical care pathways and advanced ICU practice.
* Contribute to clinical research, transplant-related audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing medical education programs.
* Maintain accurate ICU records, procedure notes, consultation reports, family discussion records, treatment plans, and handover documentation in line with hospital policies.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Completed residency in Critical Care Medicine, Internal Medicine, or a closely related specialty.
* Fellowship or subspecialty training in Transplant ICU, Critical Care Medicine, or transplant-related intensive care.
* Board certification such as UK CCT, American Board, Canadian FRCP, or equivalent recognized qualification.
* Active DHA Consultant License or eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant classification.
* Minimum 5 years of post-fellowship experience in transplant-related ICU care.
* Proven expertise in managing liver and kidney transplant patients in high-acuity intensive care settings.
* Strong knowledge of advanced ICU technologies, EMR systems, organ support, infection prevention, perioperative transplant care, and critical care governance.
* Excellent leadership, communication, decision-making, clinical documentation, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Proficiency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
