Role Context
The Consultant - Transplant Critical Care will lead ICU care for critically ill transplant patients across pre-operative, intra-operative support, and post-operative recovery phases. The role requires strong expertise in liver and kidney transplant critical care, advanced organ support, renal replacement therapy, invasive monitoring, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic optimization, and ethical patient-centered decision-making. The consultant will work closely with transplant surgeons, nephrologists, hepatologists, anesthetists, emergency teams, nurses, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals to improve transplant outcomes in Dubai.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead ICU care for critically ill liver and kidney transplant patients across pre-operative optimization, intra-operative coordination, and post-operative critical care.
* Manage high-acuity transplant patients requiring advanced organ support, mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, invasive monitoring, vasoactive medication, and hemodynamic stabilization.
* Collaborate closely with transplant surgeons, nephrologists, hepatologists, anesthetists, intensivists, emergency physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
* Develop individualized ICU treatment plans based on transplant status, organ function, infection risk, immunosuppression needs, hemodynamic profile, and recovery goals.
* Provide expert clinical decision-making for complications related to transplant surgery, graft function, sepsis, bleeding, respiratory failure, renal failure, shock, and multi-organ dysfunction.
* Perform and supervise advanced critical care procedures, including airway management, invasive lines, ventilator management, renal replacement therapy coordination, and hemodynamic monitoring.
* Provide on-call support and specialist consultations across ICU, emergency department, transplant units, and related critical care areas.
* Ensure compliance with DHA regulations, hospital policies, international transplant ICU standards, infection control practices, and patient safety protocols.
* Support safe handovers, multidisciplinary transplant rounds, escalation planning, family communication, and continuity of care across departments.
* Participate in clinical research, transplant-related audits, quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and protocol development.
* Train and mentor junior physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, and ICU staff in transplant critical care principles and advanced ICU practice.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, procedure notes, ICU progress records, consent documentation, treatment plans, handover notes, and discharge summaries.
* Promote ethical practice, patient-centered care, confidentiality, clinical governance, and continuous learning within the transplant critical care service.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Completed residency training in Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Internal Medicine, or a related specialty.
* Fellowship or subspecialty training in Transplant ICU or Critical Care Medicine.
* Board certification such as UK CCT, American Board, Canadian FRCP, or equivalent recognized qualification.
* Valid DHA Consultant License or eligibility for DHA Consultant classification.
* Minimum 5 years of post-fellowship experience in transplant-related ICU care.
* Proven experience managing liver transplant patients, kidney transplant patients, or complex transplant critical care cases.
* Strong expertise in mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, invasive monitoring, hemodynamic support, sepsis care, organ failure management, and perioperative ICU care.
* Familiarity with advanced ICU technologies and electronic medical record systems.
* Strong leadership, communication, clinical decision-making, team coordination, and family counselling skills.
* Proficiency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
* Interest in academic teaching, clinical research, transplant protocols, or critical care service development is preferred.
