Role Context
The Consultant - Transplant Critical Care will lead the intensive care management of critically ill liver and kidney transplant patients across preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative stages. The role requires advanced decision-making, precise hemodynamic management, strong procedural capability, and close coordination with transplant surgeons, nephrologists, hepatologists, anesthetists, emergency teams, and ICU nursing staff. The consultant will help strengthen transplant-related critical care services in Dubai by improving clinical outcomes, supporting safe ICU pathways, and contributing to research, education, and quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead ICU care for critically ill transplant patients, including preoperative optimization, intraoperative support coordination, and postoperative intensive care management.
* Manage complex liver and kidney transplant cases requiring advanced monitoring, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic support, renal replacement therapy, and organ support.
* Collaborate closely with transplant surgeons, nephrologists, hepatologists, anesthetists, emergency physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Perform and supervise advanced critical care procedures, including invasive monitoring, airway support, ventilator management, vascular access, and renal replacement therapy.
* Develop individualized ICU treatment plans based on transplant status, organ function, infection risk, hemodynamic condition, laboratory trends, imaging, and multidisciplinary input.
* Provide urgent consultations across critical care areas, emergency departments, transplant units, and related hospital services.
* Ensure compliance with DHA regulations, transplant ICU protocols, infection control requirements, international best practices, and patient safety standards.
* Lead daily ICU rounds, escalation planning, risk review, and clinical decision-making for high-acuity transplant patients.
* Support junior doctors, fellows, residents, and ICU staff through teaching, mentoring, bedside guidance, and structured training programs.
* Participate in clinical research, transplant-related academic activity, case discussions, morbidity reviews, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Maintain accurate medical records, ICU notes, procedure documentation, consent records, treatment plans, and handover communication.
* Contribute to ethical, patient-centered care by communicating clearly with families and supporting complex decision-making during critical illness.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Completed residency in Critical Care Medicine, Internal Medicine, or a closely related specialty.
* Fellowship or subspecialty training in Transplant ICU, Critical Care Medicine, or transplant-related intensive care.
* Board certification such as UK CCT, American Board, Canadian FRCP, or an equivalent recognized consultant-level qualification.
* Valid license or eligibility for DHA Consultant classification.
* Minimum 5 years of post-fellowship experience in transplant-related ICU care.
* Proven experience managing liver transplant and kidney transplant patients in a high-acuity ICU environment.
* Strong proficiency in invasive monitoring, mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, hemodynamic support, and advanced ICU technologies.
* Familiarity with EMR systems, critical care documentation, transplant care pathways, and multidisciplinary ICU workflows.
* Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and team coordination skills.
* Proficiency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
* Commitment to patient-centered care, ethical practice, continuous learning, academic teaching, and transplant-related research.
