Role Context
This Emergency Medicine HOD Consultant position requires an accomplished physician with extensive consultant-level clinical experience and a proven record of leading an emergency department. The physician will balance direct patient care with responsibility for departmental strategy, clinical performance, staffing, policies, quality standards, and operational efficiency.
The department head will manage high-acuity presentations, guide multidisciplinary emergency responses, and ensure that patients receive timely assessment, stabilization, treatment, and onward referral. The role also involves strengthening clinical pathways, developing medical teams, and maintaining compliance with DHA requirements and recognized international healthcare standards.
Core Duties
* Lead the Emergency Medicine Department and maintain high standards of clinical care, patient safety, and operational performance.
* Provide expert assessment, diagnosis, stabilization, and treatment for acute medical and surgical emergencies.
* Manage critically ill and injured adult and pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department.
* Direct trauma resuscitation, airway management, cardiac emergency care, and critical-care stabilization.
* Perform and supervise advanced emergency procedures within the consultant\'s licensed scope of practice.
* Establish clinical priorities and support timely triage, investigation, treatment, admission, transfer, or discharge decisions.
* Lead multidisciplinary responses to major trauma, cardiac arrest, mass-casualty incidents, and other complex emergencies.
* Develop, review, and implement departmental policies, clinical protocols, escalation procedures, and evidence-based care pathways.
* Monitor patient flow, waiting times, resource utilization, clinical outcomes, and departmental capacity.
* Oversee physician staffing, duty schedules, workforce planning, performance management, and professional conduct.
* Support the recruitment, orientation, supervision, and retention of emergency medicine professionals.
* Mentor junior doctors, residents, nurses, and allied healthcare staff.
* Promote continuing medical education, simulation training, competency development, and emergency preparedness.
* Collaborate with hospital leadership, intensive care, trauma surgery, cardiology, pediatrics, radiology, and other clinical departments.
* Coordinate effective referral and admission pathways for patients requiring specialist or inpatient treatment.
* Review complex cases and provide senior clinical guidance during high-risk decision-making.
* Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure departmental compliance with DHA regulations and hospital policies.
* Lead clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, incident evaluations, and quality-improvement programs.
* Monitor departmental performance indicators and implement corrective actions when service gaps are identified.
* Participate in hospital committees, strategic planning meetings, and external professional forums.
* Promote ethical practice, infection prevention, patient confidentiality, and a culture of continuous improvement.
* Contribute to emergency medicine research, service innovation, and the adoption of appropriate clinical technologies.
Required Skills and Experience
* Medical degree such as an MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Completion of accredited specialist training in Emergency Medicine.
* Board certification or an equivalent recognized qualification in Emergency Medicine.
* Eligibility for a DHA Consultant licence in Dubai.
* Minimum of 10-15 years of post-specialization experience in emergency medicine.
* Proven experience as a Head of Department, Clinical Director, or senior emergency medicine leader.
* Advanced expertise in trauma care, resuscitation, airway management, cardiac emergencies, and critical stabilization.
* Demonstrated ability to manage complex clinical situations and make timely decisions under pressure.
* Strong understanding of emergency department operations, patient-flow management, and workforce planning.
* Experience developing clinical policies, protocols, performance standards, and quality initiatives.
* Effective leadership, organizational, conflict-resolution, and team-development abilities.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when working with patients, families, clinical teams, and hospital executives.
