What does an Infectious Disease Specialist do?
- Diagnose and manage a wide range of complex infectious diseases affecting adults and vulnerable populations
- Develop patient-specific treatment plans based on evidence-based protocols
- Collaborate with healthcare teams to optimize patient outcomes and prevent transmission of contagious conditions
- Provide expert consultations for inpatient and outpatient infectious disease cases
- Stay abreast of emerging infectious threats and global best practices
What are the key responsibilities?
- Perform comprehensive medical evaluations, including physical exams and diagnostic reviews
- Order and interpret laboratory results, imaging studies, and microbiological tests
- Prescribe targeted antimicrobial therapies, adjust regimens, and monitor for resistance or adverse reactions
- Educate patients and caregivers on infection prevention, transmission risks, and medication adherence
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for coordinated care of critically ill or immunocompromised patients
- Participate in hospital infection control programs and outbreak management
- Engage in clinical research or contribute to quality improvement projects
- Maintain detailed and accurate medical records in compliance with UAE healthcare regulations
What qualifications and experience are required?
Education:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) from a recognized university
- Completion of Internal Medicine residency and fellowship training in Infectious Diseases
- Board certification in Infectious Disease (US/UK/Canada/Europe preferred)
- DHA eligibility or license preferred
Experience:
- Minimum 3 to 5 years post-specialization experience in Infectious Disease management
- Hands-on experience managing complex cases, including HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis, tropical diseases, and hospital-acquired infections
Skills:
- Excellent diagnostic reasoning and problem-solving abilities
- Strong communication skills for patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and infection surveillance tools
- Up-to-date with evolving global health protocols, antimicrobial resistance trends, and public health alerts
