What Does a Pulmonologist Do?
A Pulmonologist focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract. From asthma and tuberculosis to lung cancer and sleep apnea, you’ll be managing a broad spectrum of pulmonary conditions while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
What Are the Key Responsibilities?
- Perform diagnostic procedures including pulmonary function tests, bronchoscopies, sputum analysis, biopsies, and arterial blood gas evaluations
- Manage ongoing care for chronic pulmonary conditions such as asthma, COPD, and interstitial lung disease
- Diagnose and treat acute infections like pneumonia and tuberculosis
- Develop and oversee patient-specific treatment plans involving medications, surgeries, and pulmonary rehabilitation
- Collaborate with physical therapists to design breathing and lung-strengthening exercise programs
- Provide inpatient care in hospitals or ICUs, overseeing junior medical staff and ensuring high standards of treatment
- Conduct regular follow-up visits to monitor patient progress and adjust care plans accordingly

- Bachelor’s degree in Medicine
- Specialization certificate in Pulmonology
- Completed internship and clinical residency in pulmonology
Experience:
- Minimum 3 to 4 years of hands-on experience in a pulmonology role
