Role Context
The Specialist Hemato-Oncologist will provide integrated care for adults with benign and malignant blood disorders as well as solid-tumor cancers requiring systemic treatment. The role combines diagnostic evaluation, chemotherapy planning, interpretation of hematologic investigations, management of treatment complications, and coordination with pathology, radiology, surgery, and radiation oncology. By applying internationally recognized cancer guidelines and modern therapeutic approaches, the specialist will help improve diagnostic accuracy, treatment continuity, patient safety, and long-term oncology outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess and manage patients presenting with hematologic disorders and malignant disease.
* Diagnose benign and malignant blood conditions using clinical findings, laboratory investigations, pathology, and imaging.
* Evaluate patients with solid tumors and determine appropriate systemic treatment pathways.
* Develop individualized chemotherapy plans according to diagnosis, disease stage, performance status, treatment goals, and recognized oncology protocols.
* Oversee chemotherapy administration and monitor patients throughout treatment cycles.
* Assess treatment response and modify therapy according to clinical progress, toxicity, imaging, and laboratory findings.
* Manage inpatient hemato-oncology patients requiring close monitoring, urgent treatment, or management of complications.
* Provide outpatient consultations and follow-up for patients receiving long-term cancer or hematologic care.
* Interpret bone marrow biopsy findings in conjunction with pathology reports and clinical presentation.
* Review flow cytometry and other specialized hematologic investigations used in diagnosis and disease monitoring.
* Evaluate complete blood counts, coagulation studies, peripheral blood findings, biochemical profiles, and relevant molecular or cytogenetic results.
* Manage complex hematologic emergencies including severe cytopenias, bleeding, thrombosis, tumor lysis, neutropenic complications, and acute disease progression.
* Prescribe and supervise targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and other modern systemic treatments where clinically appropriate.
* Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and contribute specialist recommendations to treatment planning.
* Coordinate patient care with pathologists, radiologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, pharmacists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Apply recognized clinical guidance including NCCN, ESMO, and ASCO recommendations where appropriate.
* Provide patients and families with clear explanations regarding diagnosis, treatment options, expected benefits, potential adverse effects, and follow-up plans.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, chemotherapy records, treatment plans, investigation results, and clinical follow-up documentation.
* Support electronic medical records and digital oncology workflows to improve continuity and accuracy of patient information.
* Participate in clinical governance, treatment outcome reviews, quality improvement programs, and patient safety initiatives.
* Provide teaching, clinical guidance, and mentorship to junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff.
* Contribute to development of oncology protocols, service pathways, and expansion of cancer care programs.
* Maintain current knowledge of evolving hematology, medical oncology, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and evidence-based treatment practices.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree from a recognized institution with appropriate specialist training in Hematology, Medical Oncology, or Hemato-Oncology.
* American Board, Canadian FRCSC, UK CCT, CESR, or another recognized equivalent Western specialist qualification.
* Eligibility for DHA Specialist licensing in Dubai.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-specialist clinical experience is preferred.
* Strong experience managing both benign and malignant hematologic disorders.
* Demonstrated competence in assessment and treatment of solid-tumor oncology cases.
* Practical experience with chemotherapy planning, monitoring, and toxicity management.
* Strong ability to interpret bone marrow biopsies, flow cytometry, and specialized hematologic investigations.
* Knowledge of targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and modern cancer treatment protocols is highly desirable.
* Ability to manage high-risk hematologic and oncologic emergencies.
* Familiarity with internationally recognized treatment standards including NCCN, ESMO, and ASCO guidelines.
* Experience working within multidisciplinary tumor board environments.
* Strong communication and counseling skills when discussing complex diagnoses and treatment decisions.
* Ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse healthcare setting.
