The Kitchen Supervisor supports smooth culinary operations by coordinating cooks and kitchen employees throughout preparation and service. The position connects production planning, presentation quality, ingredient availability, food safety, and team performance, helping the restaurant deliver consistent meals while responding effectively to changing service requirements.
Working closely with culinary management and Food and Beverage service teams, the supervisor keeps production organized, communicates menu availability, supports employee development, and identifies quality or operational issues before they affect the guest experience.
Key Responsibilities
* Supervise and coordinate cooks and kitchen employees during food preparation and service periods.
* Organize daily kitchen activities so production requirements are completed accurately and on schedule.
* Determine appropriate food presentation, plating, portioning, arrangement, and garnishing standards.
* Create attractive food displays that support restaurant presentation expectations.
* Monitor quantities being prepared and adjust production according to operational demand.
* Communicate menu specials, unavailable products, and other relevant information to Food and Beverage service employees.
* Prepare special meals, substitutions, and alternative menu items when operationally required.
* Assist cooks with preparation tasks and ensure team members have the ingredients, equipment, and supplies needed for efficient production.
* Check kitchen inventory and monitor stocks of food, ingredients, and operating supplies.
* Maintain food safety logs and required documentation relating to food products and kitchen controls.
* Inspect prepared food for freshness, appearance, taste, temperature, portion consistency, and overall quality.
* Escalate products or ingredients that do not meet required specifications to culinary management.
* Help management with hiring, employee orientation, training, scheduling, coaching, evaluation, counseling, and performance management.
* Motivate kitchen employees and provide practical guidance that strengthens teamwork and service consistency.
* Follow established safety, security, hygiene, and food handling procedures throughout kitchen operations.
* Report maintenance requirements, workplace accidents, injuries, hazards, and unsafe working conditions promptly.
* Complete assigned safety training and maintain required operational certifications.
* Respond professionally to guest service requirements and assist in resolving culinary-related concerns.
* Communicate clearly with colleagues and maintain cooperative working relationships across culinary and service teams.
* Protect company assets, confidential information, kitchen equipment, and operational resources.
* Maintain professional grooming, uniform, and workplace conduct standards.
* Perform physically active kitchen duties including extended standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling within established safety limits.
* Complete additional operational duties assigned by supervisors when required.
Ideal Profile
A technical, trade, or vocational school qualification is preferred, particularly where studies relate to culinary operations, food preparation, hospitality, or kitchen management.
Candidates should bring approximately 4-6 years of relevant professional kitchen experience together with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
The role requires practical knowledge of food preparation, kitchen workflows, portion control, presentation, stock handling, food safety procedures, and quality inspection. Candidates should be comfortable supervising employees while remaining actively involved in day-to-day production.
Strong communication skills are important because the Kitchen Supervisor works closely with cooks, Food and Beverage service employees, managers, and guests. The ability to coach colleagues, organize competing priorities, notice quality issues quickly, and maintain professional standards during busy service periods is essential.
