Position Overview
The Assistant Vice President - Engineering Department leads high-value engineering underwriting activities by assessing complex risks, negotiating reinsurance terms, and ensuring strong portfolio profitability. This role supports business growth through strategic underwriting decisions, facultative placements, and effective stakeholder management across brokers, cedants, reinsurers, and internal leadership teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Analyze and evaluate large-scale engineering risks to determine underwriting decisions, pricing strategies, and risk acceptance levels
* Arrange reinsurance terms for engineering lines of business with treaty and facultative markets to ensure strong coverage and profitability
* Secure special acceptances from treaty leaders for non-standard, high-value, or technically complex risks
* Negotiate facultative placements with reinsurers to obtain favorable terms, conditions, and pricing structures
* Review facultative inward slips from cedants and brokers to identify exposures and ensure alignment with underwriting standards
* Evaluate and accept facultative inward engineering risks while maintaining portfolio quality and profitability targets
* Review and interpret bespoke contract wordings for engineering risks to ensure compliance, clarity, and reduced legal exposure
* Prepare and arrange policy documents, endorsements, and underwriting documentation with strong attention to contractual obligations
* Collaborate with brokers, reinsurers, internal underwriting teams, and senior management to support business objectives
* Monitor portfolio performance and contribute to strategic growth initiatives within the engineering insurance division
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Insurance, Risk Management, or a related discipline
* Professional certifications in insurance, reinsurance, or underwriting are considered a strong advantage
* Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in engineering insurance underwriting
* At least 2 years in a senior underwriting or managerial role within engineering insurance
* Strong experience managing profitable engineering insurance portfolios and large risk placements
* Deep understanding of treaty and facultative reinsurance markets
* Strong knowledge of engineering risk analysis, contract wording review, and underwriting governance
* Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills
* Ability to manage multiple high-value transactions under pressure with strong commercial judgment
