Role Context
The Mechanical Engineering Quality Assurance Lead will oversee the reliability of engineering content used to train and evaluate advanced artificial intelligence systems. Assignments may involve reviewing technical explanations, design reasoning, numerical calculations, equipment recommendations, system analyses, manufacturing scenarios, and step-by-step engineering solutions.
The successful candidate will identify incorrect assumptions, calculation errors, inconsistent units, weak engineering logic, unsafe recommendations, unrealistic design choices, and incomplete technical explanations. The role also includes contributor guidance, onboarding, calibration, documentation management, and continuous improvement of scalable mechanical engineering review workflows.
Key Responsibilities
* Review mechanical engineering AI training items against detailed project rubrics and technical quality standards.
* Evaluate engineering accuracy, calculation methods, reasoning quality, terminology, clarity, formatting, and instruction compliance.
* Verify equations, formulas, assumptions, unit conversions, intermediate steps, and final conclusions.
* Assess content involving statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
* Review machine design, mechanical components, manufacturing methods, tolerances, materials, and production-related recommendations.
* Evaluate HVAC, energy, thermal, piping, rotating equipment, and mechanical system explanations where required.
* Identify dimensional errors, invalid assumptions, incorrect equations, and misleading technical conclusions.
* Check whether engineering solutions consider safety factors, operating limits, reliability, maintenance, and service conditions.
* Flag recommendations that could create mechanical, thermal, pressure, operational, or workplace safety risks.
* Review the appropriate use of engineering standards, specifications, design codes, and accepted technical practices.
* Assess technical drawings, diagrams, calculations, tables, equipment data, and design narratives.
* Confirm that AI-generated responses distinguish general technical information from work requiring qualified engineering approval.
* Spot-check submissions completed by trainers, engineers, researchers, annotators, educators, reviewers, and QA contributors.
* Provide precise written feedback explaining each technical issue and the corrective action required.
* Escalate recurring, critical, safety-sensitive, or production-impacting quality concerns.
* Communicate guideline updates, workflow changes, and mechanical engineering review expectations through Discord.
* Respond to contributor questions involving formulas, units, materials, systems, standards, safety, and rubric interpretation.
* Contact inactive trainers and QAs, encourage participation, document follow-ups, and report availability issues.
* Create and maintain style guides, FAQs, trackers, quality notes, examples, honeypots, calibration tasks, and onboarding materials.
* Conduct remote onboarding and training sessions for mechanical engineering trainers and reviewers.
* Ensure contributors apply evolving engineering review standards consistently.
* Analyze recurring quality gaps and recommend practical improvements to review workflows.
* Maintain accurate records of evaluations, contributor feedback, performance trends, and corrective actions.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor\'s, Master\'s, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, Energy Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
* Minimum 3 years of professional experience in mechanical engineering, design, manufacturing, consulting, teaching, technical review, quality control, or research.
* Strong English communication skills for interpreting detailed project guidelines and providing clear technical feedback.
* Thorough understanding of engineering mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, fluids, heat transfer, and materials.
* Ability to review calculations, equations, units, assumptions, and engineering conclusions accurately.
* Familiarity with machine design, manufacturing processes, HVAC, energy systems, piping, or rotating equipment is preferred.
* Understanding of engineering standards, technical specifications, tolerances, safety factors, and operating limits.
* Ability to identify unsafe recommendations, unrealistic designs, incorrect calculations, and incomplete reasoning.
* Experience preparing or reviewing technical reports, drawings, calculations, specifications, procedures, or design documents.
* Strong analytical judgment with careful attention to numerical, mechanical, operational, and safety details.
* Experience leading or supporting engineers, researchers, educators, reviewers, annotators, or QA teams is strongly preferred.
* Ability to apply detailed rubrics consistently across high-volume engineering review assignments.
* Confidence using Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, and project management systems.
* Experience developing calibration tasks, onboarding resources, FAQs, style guides, and quality documentation is beneficial.
* Familiarity with AI training, data annotation, large language model evaluation, engineering QA, or rubric-based review is advantageous.
* Comfortable working independently in a fast-moving remote environment.
