The Consultant Breast
Surgeon provides comprehensive surgical care for patients with benign, high-risk and malignant breast conditions. The position combines diagnostic assessment, operative treatment, cancer pathway coordination and long-term follow-up, with a strong emphasis on achieving safe oncological outcomes while preserving function and appearance whenever clinically appropriate.
The consultant works closely with breast radiology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology and reconstructive surgery teams to develop individualized treatment strategies. The role also contributes to early detection, patient education, clinical governance and service development across a multidisciplinary breast program.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess patients presenting with suspected or confirmed breast disease.
* Conduct comprehensive clinical breast examinations.
* Review mammography, ultrasound, MRI and other relevant breast imaging.
* Interpret diagnostic investigations alongside clinical findings.
* Diagnose and manage benign breast conditions.
* Evaluate breast lumps and determine appropriate investigation pathways.
* Assess patients presenting with breast pain.
* Investigate nipple discharge and other concerning breast symptoms.
* Diagnose and treat breast infections.
* Manage patients identified as having high-risk breast conditions.
* Evaluate patients with newly diagnosed breast malignancy.
* Develop surgical treatment strategies based on tumor characteristics, imaging and patient preferences.
* Perform breast-conserving surgery including lumpectomy.
* Undertake mastectomy when clinically indicated.
* Perform sentinel lymph node biopsy.
* Conduct axillary lymph node dissection where required.

Candidates should hold Board Certification or an equivalent specialist qualification in General Surgery together with fellowship or subspecialty training in Breast Surgery, Oncoplastic Breast Surgery or Surgical Oncology with a strong breast focus.
A minimum of 8-10 years of post-specialization experience at consultant level is required.
The successful surgeon should demonstrate extensive experience in breast cancer surgery, benign breast disease and advanced oncoplastic procedures.
Strong procedural expertise in lumpectomy, mastectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary surgery is essential.
