Role Context
This consultant appointment provides specialized anesthesia
The role requires advanced knowledge of cardiac physiology, extracorporeal circulation, transesophageal echocardiography, invasive monitoring, mechanical circulatory support, and perioperative crisis management. Close collaboration with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams will support safer procedures and stronger clinical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide specialist anesthesia services for adult and pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Deliver anesthesia for thoracic and major vascular surgical procedures.
* Conduct detailed pre-anesthetic assessments covering medical history, cardiovascular risk, airway status, investigations, and functional capacity.
* Optimize patients with complex cardiac and systemic conditions before surgery.
* Develop individualized anesthesia plans based on surgical complexity, physiology, comorbidities, and expected postoperative needs.
* Administer general anesthesia for coronary artery bypass grafting procedures.
* Provide anesthesia for heart valve repair and replacement surgery.
* Support congenital heart procedures involving pediatric and adult patients.
* Deliver anesthesia care for heart transplantation and complex aortic surgery where credentialed.
* Provide anesthesia support for cardiac catheterization and interventional cardiology procedures.
* Manage patients undergoing TAVI, TAVR, MitraClip, electrophysiology, and structural heart interventions.
* Perform and interpret intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography within approved clinical privileges.
* Use TEE findings to support surgical decisions, ventricular function assessment, valve evaluation, volume management, and complication detection.
* Insert and manage arterial lines, central venous catheters, and pulmonary artery catheters.
* Apply advanced cardiac output and invasive hemodynamic monitoring.
* Manage anticoagulation, blood conservation, transfusion, fluid therapy, and cardiovascular medication during procedures.
* Coordinate care during cardiopulmonary bypass with cardiac surgeons and perfusionists.
* Provide perioperative critical care support for cardiac surgical patients.
* Manage mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medication, arrhythmias, low cardiac output, bleeding, and postoperative instability.
* Respond to cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, severe hemodynamic deterioration, and perioperative emergencies.
* Lead or support advanced resuscitation in operating theatres, catheterization laboratories, and critical care areas.
* Collaborate with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Explain anesthesia plans, risks, monitoring methods, pain management, and recovery expectations to patients and families.
* Obtain informed consent and document anesthesia discussions accurately.
* Maintain complete preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative anesthesia records.
* Ensure compliance with Dubai Health Authority regulations, hospital policies, infection control, and patient safety standards.
* Participate in clinical audits, morbidity reviews, quality improvement projects, research, and continuing medical education.
* Mentor junior anesthesiologists, residents, fellows, and allied healthcare professionals where applicable.
* Remain current with advances in cardiac anesthesia, perioperative echocardiography, hemodynamic monitoring, and cardiovascular critical care.
Ideal Profile
Applicants must hold an MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution and have completed an approved residency in Anesthesiology.
Board certification or an equivalent recognized qualification in Anesthesiology is required. Candidates must also have fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in Cardiac Anesthesia from a recognized institution.
Applicants should have at least eight to ten years of post-specialization experience in cardiac anesthesia. Extensive experience supporting adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, structural heart procedures, and perioperative critical care is essential.
Certification in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography is strongly preferred. Candidates must demonstrate competence in intraoperative TEE interpretation, invasive monitoring, cardiac physiology, and management of high-risk cardiovascular patients.
A valid Dubai Health Authority Consultant licence, eligibility letter, or confirmed eligibility to obtain one is required.
Previous experience within a tertiary-care hospital operating an established cardiothoracic surgery program is highly preferred. The successful consultant will demonstrate excellent clinical judgment, crisis leadership, communication, documentation, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
