Role Context
The Consultant
Working closely with obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, geneticists and other subspecialists, the consultant helps establish accurate diagnoses and coordinated treatment plans. The position has a direct impact on pregnancy management, delivery planning and neonatal preparedness in complex cases.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide specialist fetal medicine consultations for women with high-risk pregnancies.
* Evaluate suspected fetal abnormalities and complex prenatal conditions.
* Perform detailed fetal anomaly scans using advanced ultrasound techniques.
* Conduct fetal echocardiography to assess congenital cardiac abnormalities.
* Perform Doppler studies to evaluate fetal circulation and placental function.
* Coordinate appropriate prenatal genetic investigations according to clinical findings.
* Interpret fetal imaging and diagnostic results within the broader maternal and pregnancy context.
* Develop individualized management plans for pregnancies affected by fetal abnormalities.
* Collaborate with obstetricians and maternal-fetal medicine specialists on high-risk pregnancy management.
* Coordinate with neonatologists to support delivery planning and anticipated neonatal care.
* Work with geneticists when hereditary, chromosomal or congenital conditions are suspected.
* Participate in multidisciplinary fetal medicine case discussions.
* Perform fetal blood sampling when clinically indicated.
* Undertake intrauterine transfusions within approved specialist privileges.
* Perform fetal shunt placement and other appropriate prenatal interventions.
* Assess procedural risks carefully before recommending invasive fetal treatment.
* Monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing before and after prenatal procedures.
* Explain fetal diagnoses and investigation findings clearly to patients and families.
* Provide compassionate counselling regarding prognosis, treatment alternatives and pregnancy management options.
* Support families through complex clinical decision-making while maintaining informed consent principles.
* Maintain accurate and detailed clinical records for assessments, procedures and follow-up care.
* Ensure effective communication between fetal medicine and other clinical teams.
* Follow hospital standards, clinical governance requirements and applicable healthcare regulations.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives relevant to maternal and fetal outcomes.
* Contribute to departmental clinical meetings and complex case reviews.
* Maintain current knowledge of developments in fetal imaging, prenatal diagnosis and fetal therapy.
* Participate in research projects, publications and academic activities where appropriate.
* Support the education and development of junior doctors.
* Provide guidance to sonographers and allied healthcare professionals involved in fetal care.
* Maintain continuing professional development and specialist competency.
Ideal Profile
The role requires an MBBS, MD or equivalent medical qualification from an accredited institution together with recognized specialist training in Fetal Medicine.
Candidates should hold Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology and have completed advanced fetal medicine training through an established specialist program.
A minimum of five years of post-qualification experience in fetal medicine is required, preferably gained within a tertiary hospital, maternal-fetal medicine center or dedicated fetal medicine unit.
The successful consultant should demonstrate advanced capability in fetal ultrasound, anomaly scanning, fetal echocardiography, Doppler assessment and prenatal diagnostic procedures.
Practical experience with fetal interventions such as fetal blood sampling, intrauterine transfusion and fetal shunt placement is important for this senior clinical role.
Strong counselling skills are essential because the consultant will frequently support families facing complex fetal diagnoses and difficult treatment decisions.
Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language capability would be advantageous in a multicultural healthcare setting.
