Role Context
The Consultant Interventional Radiologist provides advanced minimally invasive treatment using imaging technology to diagnose and manage vascular, oncological, emergency, and other complex
medical conditions. The role combines diagnostic imaging expertise with procedural precision, allowing many patients to receive targeted treatment without conventional open surgery.
Working across radiology, oncology, vascular medicine, surgery, emergency care, and other specialties, the consultant plays an important role in determining the safest and most effective image-guided treatment pathway. Strong procedural judgment, rapid interpretation of imaging findings, and careful management of peri-procedural risks are essential to achieving high-quality outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess patients referred for diagnostic or therapeutic interventional radiology procedures.
* Review clinical history, imaging, laboratory results, and procedural indications before intervention.
* Determine whether image-guided treatment is appropriate for each patient.
* Perform angioplasty for suitable vascular conditions.
* Carry out vascular stenting within approved clinical privileges.
* Perform arterial and venous embolization procedures.
* Conduct image-guided biopsies for diagnostic evaluation.
* Perform percutaneous drainage procedures for abscesses, fluid collections, and other indications.
* Undertake additional minimally invasive interventions according to training and credentialing.
* Use CT guidance to plan and perform interventional procedures.
* Utilize ultrasound for real-time procedural guidance.
* Review MRI studies where relevant to diagnosis and treatment planning.
* Interpret cross-sectional imaging to identify pathology and procedural access routes.
* Evaluate vascular anatomy before interventional treatment.

Western training is mandatory, with qualifications such as UK CCT, American Board, or another recognized equivalent.
