Role Context
This consultant appointment supports children and adults with complex ophthalmic conditions
The role combines direct patient care with surgical responsibility, multidisciplinary decision-making, clinical education, and academic participation. Accurate diagnosis and timely intervention will help preserve vision, improve childhood visual development, and reduce complications associated with inflammatory eye disease.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and treat congenital, developmental, inflammatory, and acquired eye conditions.
* Provide comprehensive ophthalmic care for infants, children, adolescents, and patients with complex ocular inflammation.
* Assess and manage strabismus, amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, congenital glaucoma, and anterior segment disorders.
* Perform strabismus surgery and other approved pediatric ophthalmic procedures.
* Undertake pediatric cataract and complex anterior segment surgery within the consultant\'s credentialed scope.
* Evaluate congenital eye abnormalities and develop individualized treatment and follow-up plans.
* Provide retinopathy of prematurity screening, monitoring, and treatment.
* Coordinate visual rehabilitation and amblyopia therapy with orthoptists, optometrists, and family members.
* Diagnose and manage complex uveitis, ocular immunology conditions, and inflammatory eye disease.
* Prescribe, monitor, and adjust ocular or systemic immunosuppressive therapies.
* Perform advanced diagnostic investigations and therapeutic procedures for inflammatory ophthalmic disorders.
* Monitor treatment response, medication safety, recurrence, and potential complications.
* Collaborate with rheumatology, pediatrics, neonatology, internal medicine, and other relevant specialties.
* Participate in multidisciplinary discussions involving complex pediatric and inflammatory cases.
* Explain diagnoses, treatment options, surgical risks, expected outcomes, and follow-up requirements to patients and families.
* Maintain complete clinical records, operative notes, consent documentation, and treatment plans.
* Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based protocol development.
* Support teaching, specialist training, case presentations, research, and academic initiatives.
* Maintain professional knowledge through continuous education and current ophthalmology literature.
Ideal Profile
Applicants must hold a recognized medical degree, specialist ophthalmology qualification, and board certification or an equivalent approved credential.
Fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus is required for the pediatric component of the position. Fellowship training in Uveitis or Ocular Immunology is required for responsibility involving complex inflammatory eye disease.
Candidates should have at least five years of post-fellowship clinical experience in the relevant ophthalmology subspecialty. Strong surgical capability, sound clinical judgment, and experience managing complex referral cases are essential.
Eligibility for licensing with the Dubai Health Authority is required. The successful consultant should communicate clearly with patients, parents, clinical colleagues, and multidisciplinary specialists while maintaining a compassionate and academically engaged approach to care.
