Role Context
This consultant appointment provides specialist anesthesia care for pediatric patients undergoing surgical, diagnostic, interventional, and emergency procedures. The physician will evaluate each child\'s medical
The role requires advanced clinical judgment in pediatric airway management, physiological monitoring, pain control, crisis response, and post-anesthesia recovery. Close collaboration with pediatric surgeons, intensivists, neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other specialists will help protect patient safety and improve surgical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing elective and emergency procedures.
* Conduct detailed pre-anesthetic assessments covering medical history, medications, allergies, airway status, investigations, and procedural risk.
* Develop individualized anesthetic plans according to patient age, clinical condition, surgery type, and anticipated complexity.
* Explain anesthesia options, risks, fasting requirements, pain management, and recovery expectations to patients and families.
* Administer general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, sedation, and perioperative analgesia within approved clinical privileges.
* Perform advanced pediatric airway management and respond promptly to difficult airway situations.
* Monitor cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, temperature, and fluid status throughout procedures.
* Manage blood loss, fluid replacement, ventilation, hemodynamic instability, and other intraoperative concerns.
* Provide anesthesia support for diagnostic imaging, interventional procedures, and non-operating-room locations.
* Deliver comprehensive postoperative handover and oversee care in the post-anesthesia recovery unit.
* Assess and treat postoperative pain, nausea, respiratory compromise, agitation, and other anesthesia-related complications.
* Participate in pediatric code blue, resuscitation, trauma, and critical care response teams.
* Support neonatal and pediatric intensive care services when specialist anesthesia input is required.
* Coordinate perioperative plans with surgeons, intensivists, pediatricians, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Supervise and mentor junior anesthetists, residents, fellows, and other clinical trainees.
* Contribute to simulation exercises, departmental teaching, case reviews, and professional development programs.
* Participate in clinical governance, morbidity reviews, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Maintain accurate anesthesia charts, consent records, procedure notes, medication documentation, and postoperative plans.
* Engage in clinical research and remain current with advances in pediatric anesthesia and monitoring technology.
* Follow hospital policies, infection control requirements, patient safety standards, and applicable Dubai healthcare regulations.
Ideal Profile
Applicants must hold an MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution and have completed an accredited residency in Anesthesiology.
A fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology from a recognized training institution is mandatory. Candidates must also possess board certification such as American Board, UK CCT, Canadian FRCP, or an equivalent specialist credential.
At least two to five years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric anesthesia is required. Strong capability in neonatal anesthesia, pediatric airway management, perioperative risk assessment, emergency response, advanced monitoring, and postoperative care is essential.
Eligibility for a Dubai Health Authority Consultant licence is required. Experience in neonatal or pediatric intensive care, tertiary pediatric surgery, or high-acuity clinical environments would be highly valuable.
The successful consultant will demonstrate calm crisis management, precise clinical decision-making, compassionate family communication, and effective multidisciplinary teamwork. Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language ability would be advantageous.
