Role Context
This consultant appointment covers the complete pediatric anesthesia pathway, from preoperative assessment and risk stratification through intraoperative management, postoperative recovery, pain control, and follow-up.
The role also supports pediatric and neonatal intensive care teams, emergency response services, clinical governance, and workforce development. Precise airway management, evidence-based decision-making, and coordinated multidisciplinary care will help reduce perioperative risk and improve outcomes for vulnerable pediatric patients.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide safe and evidence-based anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents.
* Conduct comprehensive preoperative assessments covering medical history, airway status, investigations, medications, allergies, and procedural risk.
* Stratify perioperative risk and develop individualized anesthetic plans for each patient.
* Administer anesthesia for elective, emergency, diagnostic, and high-risk pediatric procedures.
* Manage complex neonatal and pediatric surgical cases within approved clinical privileges.
* Perform advanced pediatric and neonatal airway management.
* Control ventilation, oxygenation, fluid balance, temperature, and hemodynamic stability throughout procedures.
* Use appropriate monitoring systems to identify and respond to rapid physiological changes.
* Provide sedation and anesthesia support outside the operating theatre when required.
* Oversee post-anesthesia recovery and ensure safe transfer of care.
* Develop postoperative pain-management plans suited to the patient\'s age, condition, and procedure.
* Manage sedation protocols and respond to anesthesia-related complications.
* Support pediatric intensive care and neonatal intensive care teams with airway management and procedural sedation.
* Participate in pediatric emergency response, resuscitation, and clinical stabilization.
* Follow pediatric anesthesia safety standards, hospital policies, and applicable Dubai healthcare regulations.
* Maintain complete and timely anesthesia records, consent documentation, procedure notes, medication records, and postoperative instructions.
* Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality-improvement programs.
* Teach and supervise residents, fellows, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Contribute to simulation-based training for pediatric emergencies and airway crises.
* Participate in research, academic activities, case presentations, and continuing professional development.
* Support departmental policy development, clinical pathways, and patient-safety initiatives.
* Collaborate with pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, intensivists, nurses, and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
Ideal Profile
Applicants must hold an MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution and have completed an accredited residency in Anesthesiology.
Recognized fellowship or formal subspecialty training in Pediatric Anesthesia is mandatory. Candidates must also hold Board Certification through the American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or an equivalent approved authority.
At least three to five years of post-consultant experience in pediatric anesthesia is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate advanced expertise in neonatal and pediatric airway management, crisis response, perioperative risk assessment, complex surgical anesthesia, pain control, and pediatric resuscitation.
Eligibility for a Dubai Health Authority Consultant licence is required. Experience in a tertiary-care or high-volume pediatric surgical center would be highly advantageous.
The successful consultant will communicate clearly with families and clinical teams, remain composed during emergencies, and demonstrate strong leadership, teaching, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
