Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon provides advanced surgical treatment for children with congenital and acquired cardiac conditions, including critically ill neonates requiring complex intervention. The role covers pre-operative assessment, operative management and coordinated perioperative care across a highly specialized pediatric cardiac service.
Clinical success depends on close cooperation with pediatric cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, intensive care and perfusion teams. The consultant also contributes to surgical planning for high-risk cases, emergency intervention, clinical governance and the development of younger surgeons within the cardiac program.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac procedures for congenital heart disease.
* Undertake neonatal cardiac surgery for critically ill newborns with structural cardiac abnormalities.
* Repair congenital heart defects according to anatomical findings and individualized surgical plans.
* Perform redo cardiac procedures when previous surgical intervention requires revision or further correction.
* Evaluate pediatric cardiac patients before surgery and determine appropriate operative strategies.
* Participate in detailed surgical planning for high-risk congenital heart disease.
* Work closely with pediatric cardiologists to review diagnostic findings and treatment options.
* Coordinate perioperative management with cardiac anesthesia and pediatric intensive care teams.
* Provide emergency surgical intervention for unstable pediatric patients when immediate treatment is required.
* Assess operative risk and communicate expected outcomes to multidisciplinary teams and families.
* Monitor patients during the postoperative period in partnership with intensive care specialists.
* Support management of patients requiring ECMO or mechanical circulatory support where available.
* Contribute to decision-making for complex patients requiring staged cardiac procedures.
* Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences and congenital heart case reviews.
