The Consultant Pediatric Emergency Physician provides rapid assessment, stabilization and definitive emergency management for infants, children and adolescents presenting with acute medical, surgical and traumatic conditions. The role demands confident decision-making in time-sensitive situations, particularly when patients require advanced resuscitation, procedural intervention or escalation to intensive or specialist care.
Beyond direct clinical practice, the consultant helps strengthen Pediatric Emergency Department performance through protocol development, quality review, staff mentoring and multidisciplinary coordination. The position has a direct impact on patient safety, emergency response capability, departmental efficiency and the overall experience of children and their families during stressful clinical situations.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess infants, children and adolescents presenting with urgent and emergency medical conditions.
* Manage pediatric respiratory distress, seizures, dehydration, infections and severe allergic reactions.
* Evaluate acute surgical presentations and determine appropriate escalation or specialist referral.
* Provide emergency treatment for pediatric trauma across varying levels of severity.
* Lead pediatric resuscitation during life-threatening deterioration.
* Perform advanced airway management when clinically required.
* Establish appropriate vascular access during pediatric emergencies.
* Deliver immediate life-saving interventions according to recognized pediatric emergency protocols.
* Stabilize critically ill children before transfer to intensive care or specialist services.
* Perform lumbar puncture when indicated for diagnostic evaluation.
* Undertake fracture reduction and splinting within approved clinical privileges.
