The Consultant Pediatric Neuro-Oncologist
provides specialist care for children and adolescents with primary brain and spinal tumors, complex neuro-oncologic disease and complications arising from treatment. The role combines diagnostic evaluation, systemic cancer therapy, multidisciplinary treatment planning and long-term follow-up for patients whose conditions often require coordinated input from several highly specialized services.
The consultant plays a central role in determining individualized treatment pathways while balancing disease control, neurological function, endocrine health and long-term quality of life. Close collaboration with pediatric neurology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, rehabilitation and psychosocial services is essential throughout diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage pediatric central nervous system tumors across inpatient and outpatient settings.
* Provide specialist care for children with medulloblastoma.
* Evaluate and treat pediatric ependymoma according to tumor characteristics and treatment protocols.
* Manage low-grade and high-grade pediatric gliomas.
* Diagnose and coordinate treatment for intracranial germ cell tumors.
* Manage craniopharyngioma and other uncommon pediatric brain tumors.
* Review pathology, molecular findings and imaging results when establishing treatment strategies.
* Develop individualized neuro-oncology treatment plans according to diagnosis, stage and patient condition.
* Prescribe and supervise chemotherapy within approved clinical privileges.
* Incorporate targeted therapies when supported by tumor biology and treatment protocols.
* Use immunotherapy approaches where clinically appropriate and evidence-based.
* Coordinate radiotherapy planning with radiation oncology teams.
* Work closely with pediatric neurosurgeons on biopsy, resection and surgical treatment planning.
* Participate in decisions regarding timing and sequencing of multimodal therapy.
