Role Context

This consultant appointment provides specialist ophthalmic care for young patients with congenital, developmental, refractive, retinal, and acquired


eye conditions. The physician will use age-appropriate examination methods, advanced diagnostic investigations, and evidence-based treatment to protect vision and support healthy visual development.

The role combines outpatient consultations, emergency assessment, surgery, long-term follow-up, and multidisciplinary case coordination. Close collaboration with neonatologists, pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, orthoptists, optometrists, and other specialists will support accurate diagnosis and better functional outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

* Diagnose and manage pediatric eye conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents.
* Assess and treat strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, congenital glaucoma, and refractive disorders.
* Manage retinopathy of prematurity and coordinate appropriate screening, monitoring, and treatment.
* Evaluate congenital eyelid, lacrimal, genetic, and developmental ophthalmic disorders.
* Perform comprehensive pediatric eye examinations using age-appropriate visual assessment techniques.
* Conduct specialist diagnostic procedures and interpret ophthalmic imaging and investigation results.
* Develop individualized medical, optical, surgical, and follow-up plans.
* Perform strabismus surgery within approved clinical privileges.
* Carry out pediatric cataract surgery and other credentialed ophthalmic procedures.
* Evaluate and manage urgent or emergency pediatric ophthalmic conditions.
* Provide preoperative assessment and explain procedures, alternatives, risks, and expected outcomes to families.
* Deliver postoperative care and monitor healing, visual recovery, alignment, and potential complications.
* Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, and other healthcare professionals.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences for complex developmental, neurological, or inherited eye conditions.
* Counsel parents and caregivers regarding diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, and long-term monitoring.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative records, consent documentation, and follow-up plans.
* Follow hospital policies, infection control procedures, patient safety standards, and applicable Dubai healthcare regulations.
* Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, teaching, research, and continuing medical education.
* Remain current with advances in pediatric ophthalmology and evidence-based clinical practice.

Ideal Profile

Applicants must hold an MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution and have completed accredited specialist training in Ophthalmology.

Fellowship or formal subspecialty training in Paediatric Ophthalmology is mandatory. Candidates should have at least five years of post-specialization experience as a Consultant Ophthalmologist, including substantial responsibility for pediatric medical and surgical cases.

Western medical education or clinical experience gained in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or an equivalent healthcare system is preferred.

Eligibility for or possession of a valid Dubai Health Authority Consultant licence is required. Applicants must demonstrate expertise in strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, pediatric glaucoma, retinopathy of prematurity, and pediatric ophthalmic surgery.

The successful consultant will combine sound clinical judgment with compassionate family communication, careful documentation, and effective multidisciplinary teamwork.
