Role Context

This consultant appointment provides comprehensive ophthalmic care for young patients with congenital, developmental,


refractive, neurological, and acquired eye conditions. The physician will assess visual development, diagnose complex disorders, perform pediatric eye surgery, and create treatment plans suited to each child\'s clinical and developmental needs.

The role requires close coordination with pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, neonatologists, intensive care teams, orthoptists, optometrists, and other ophthalmology specialists. Through timely intervention and careful follow-up, the consultant will help preserve vision, support healthy visual development, and improve long-term patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

* Diagnose and manage pediatric ophthalmic conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents.
* Perform comprehensive pediatric eye examinations and age-appropriate visual assessments.
* Evaluate and treat strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, pediatric glaucoma, refractive disorders, and retinal diseases.
* Conduct specialized diagnostic procedures for complex childhood eye conditions.
* Perform strabismus surgery and other credentialed pediatric ophthalmic procedures.
* Assess surgical risks, obtain informed consent, and provide appropriate preoperative and postoperative care.
* Develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical findings, visual development, and evidence-based practice.
* Monitor patients over time and adjust medical, optical, surgical, or rehabilitative management as required.
* Provide ophthalmology consultations for neonatal and pediatric intensive care units when requested.
* Work with pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, neonatologists, and other specialists on complex cases.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and coordinated clinical decision-making.
* Explain diagnoses, treatment choices, surgical procedures, expected outcomes, and preventive eye care to families.
* Supervise and mentor junior physicians, residents, fellows, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Contribute to teaching sessions, clinical education, research, and continuing medical education programs.
* Participate in clinical governance, peer review, audit, and quality improvement activities.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative records, treatment plans, and follow-up documentation.
* Follow hospital policies, regulatory requirements, ethical standards, and patient safety procedures.

Ideal Profile

Applicants must hold an MBBS or equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution and possess recognized Board Certification, CCT, Fellowship, or an equivalent specialist qualification in Ophthalmology.

Fellowship or approved subspecialty training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus is required. Candidates must have at least five years of experience practicing at Consultant Pediatric Ophthalmologist level.

Strong expertise in pediatric ophthalmic surgery, complex childhood eye disorders, visual development, strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, and pediatric glaucoma is essential.

Eligibility for a Dubai Health Authority licence is required. Western qualifications such as UK CCT, FRCOphth, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship, or an equivalent credential will be highly valued.

The preferred consultant will demonstrate strong clinical leadership, compassionate communication, multidisciplinary teamwork, and a consistent commitment to evidence-based, child-centered care. Previous experience in a tertiary care center or children\'s hospital would be advantageous.
