Role Context
The Consultant Psychiatrist provides specialist care for adults experiencing a broad range of psychiatric and behavioral health conditions. The position combines diagnostic assessment, medication management, psychotherapy, crisis intervention and longitudinal follow-up across inpatient and outpatient services.
The consultant plays an important role in improving mental health outcomes by identifying complex psychiatric conditions early, developing individualized treatment strategies and coordinating care with psychologists, social workers, neurologists, primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals. Effective communication in Arabic and English is central to building trust, supporting treatment adherence and helping patients and families understand mental health conditions and available interventions.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments for new and existing patients.
* Diagnose anxiety disorders, depressive disorders and other mood-related conditions.
* Assess and manage bipolar disorder across acute and maintenance phases.
* Diagnose and treat schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
* Evaluate patients presenting with personality disorders and complex behavioral symptoms.
* Develop individualized psychiatric treatment plans based on diagnosis, severity and functional needs.
* Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications according to evidence-based clinical practice.
* Review medication effectiveness, adverse effects and treatment adherence during follow-up.
* Adjust pharmacological treatment according to clinical response and emerging patient needs.
* Provide psychotherapy, counseling and behavioral interventions within professional scope.
* Determine when patients require specialist psychological or structured psychotherapy services.
* Manage psychiatric patients across outpatient and inpatient settings.
* Provide ongoing care for individuals with chronic or recurrent mental health conditions.
* Conduct mental state examinations and structured psychiatric risk assessments.
* Identify patients at risk of self-harm, suicide, aggression or significant deterioration.
* Provide crisis intervention during acute psychiatric emergencies.
* Coordinate emergency psychiatric management and escalation when hospitalization is required.
* Develop safety and stabilization plans for high-risk patients.
* Collaborate with psychologists on integrated psychological and psychiatric treatment.
* Work with social workers when social circumstances influence treatment or recovery.

* Liaise with primary care physicians regarding shared management of physical and mental health needs.

* Promote relapse prevention, medication adherence and proactive mental wellbeing practices.

* Apply ethical principles when managing complex psychiatric and behavioral cases.
* Participate in clinical audits and mental health quality improvement initiatives.

Ideal Profile
The position requires an MBBS or equivalent recognized medical degree together with Board Certification or Fellowship in Psychiatry.
Candidates should have at least 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in Psychiatry, preferably gained within a reputable hospital, specialist mental health center or integrated behavioral healthcare environment.
Extensive experience in adult psychiatry is essential, including the assessment and management of mood disorders, psychotic conditions, anxiety disorders, personality disorders and complex behavioral health presentations.
The successful consultant should demonstrate strong competence in psychopharmacology, psychiatric risk assessment, crisis intervention and longer-term treatment planning.
Experience managing both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric populations is highly desirable.
Exposure to community psychiatry, structured psychotherapy programs or integrated behavioral health services would provide additional value.
Academic involvement, clinical research or teaching experience is advantageous but not essential.
