The Consultant Sports Medicine Physician provides specialist medical care for athletes and active individuals affected by acute injuries, overuse conditions and musculoskeletal disorders that may limit performance or safe participation in sport. The role combines clinical diagnosis, functional assessment, non-operative treatment and structured rehabilitation planning with a strong focus on returning patients safely to training and competition.
The consultant works closely with orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, rehabilitation specialists, radiologists, nutritionists and sports scientists to create coordinated treatment pathways. Beyond injury management, the position contributes to prevention, athlete health surveillance, concussion care and performance optimization while ensuring that return-to-play decisions remain medically appropriate and evidence-based.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess athletes and physically active patients presenting with sports-related injuries.
* Diagnose acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions affecting athletic participation.
* Conduct comprehensive clinical examinations and functional assessments.
* Perform fitness-for-sport evaluations where required.
* Evaluate biomechanical and functional factors contributing to recurrent injury.
* Develop individualized non-surgical treatment strategies.
* Coordinate rehabilitation plans according to injury severity, sport demands and recovery goals.
* Establish measurable milestones for safe return to training.
* Make evidence-based return-to-play decisions.
* Monitor rehabilitation progress and modify treatment plans when recovery is delayed.
* Diagnose and manage sports-related concussion.
* Develop graded return-to-activity plans following concussion.
* Identify situations requiring neurological, orthopedic or additional specialist referral.
* Manage muscle, tendon, ligament and joint injuries.
* Assess overuse syndromes in athletes and active populations.
* Provide conservative treatment for appropriate musculoskeletal conditions.
* Perform therapeutic injections within approved clinical privileges.
* Use musculoskeletal ultrasound to support diagnosis and procedural planning where appropriate.
* Perform ultrasound-guided interventions when clinically indicated.
* Review diagnostic imaging in collaboration with radiology teams.
* Determine when advanced imaging or additional investigations are required.
* Coordinate care with orthopedic surgeons for injuries that may require operative assessment.
* Collaborate with physiotherapists on strength, mobility and functional rehabilitation.
* Work with rehabilitation specialists on complex recovery programs.
* Engage nutritionists where nutritional status affects recovery or athletic performance.
* Collaborate with sports scientists on conditioning and performance-related considerations.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions for complex or high-performance athletes.

Ideal Profile
The position requires an MBBS, MD or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution together with completion of approved residency training.
Candidates should hold Fellowship or Board Certification in Sports Medicine, Sport and Exercise Medicine, Family Medicine with Sports Medicine fellowship training, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with Sports Medicine specialization, or an equivalent recognized qualification.
A minimum of 10 years of post-board or fellowship consultant experience in Sports Medicine is required.
The successful physician should demonstrate extensive experience diagnosing and managing sports-related injuries and musculoskeletal disorders using both clinical and functional assessment methods.
Previous experience caring for elite athletes, professional sports teams or high-performance populations is highly desirable.
Strong expertise in return-to-play decision-making, rehabilitation oversight and concussion management is expected.
Experience with musculoskeletal ultrasound and image-guided sports medicine procedures would provide a significant advantage.
Candidates should meet the professional licensing and registration requirements applicable to consultant-level medical practice in the United Arab Emirates.
