The Consultant Ophthalmologist specializing in Reconstructive and Oculoplastic Ophthalmology will diagnose and manage complex conditions affecting the eyes, eyelids, tear drainage system, orbit, and surrounding facial structures. This senior medical role requires advanced surgical expertise, precise clinical judgment, and a commitment to patient-centered eye care.
The successful consultant will perform reconstructive ophthalmic procedures, manage orbital and periocular disorders, and coordinate treatment with multidisciplinary specialists. The position also involves postoperative care, clinical governance, patient counseling, and continuous professional development.

Role Context
This opportunity is suitable for
The role includes eyelid reconstruction, lacrimal surgery, orbital procedures, trauma repair, and treatment of functional eyelid abnormalities. Complex cases will require close collaboration with ENT surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage ophthalmic, orbital, eyelid, lacrimal, and periocular disorders requiring reconstructive intervention.
* Conduct comprehensive eye examinations and develop individualized diagnostic and treatment plans.
* Perform eyelid reconstruction following trauma, tumor removal, congenital abnormalities, or tissue damage.
* Undertake lacrimal procedures for tear drainage disorders and related functional conditions.
* Perform orbital surgery and manage appropriate orbital diseases and structural abnormalities.
* Treat eyelid malpositions, including ptosis, entropion, ectropion, and other functional disorders.
* Evaluate and manage periocular tumors, orbital lesions, facial trauma, and complex reconstructive cases.
* Provide preoperative assessments and coordinate safe surgical planning.
* Deliver postoperative care, monitor recovery, and manage potential surgical complications.
* Provide comprehensive outpatient consultations and inpatient ophthalmology services.
* Collaborate with ENT, maxillofacial, plastic surgery, oncology, radiology, and multidisciplinary teams.
* Explain diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, possible risks, and expected outcomes to patients and families.
* Guide patients regarding postoperative care, medication use, follow-up appointments, and recovery requirements.
* Maintain complete, accurate, confidential, and timely medical records.
* Ensure compliance with DOH regulations, hospital policies, ethical standards, and patient-safety requirements.
* Participate in clinical audits, research activities, quality improvement programs, and departmental meetings.
* Contribute to Continuing Medical Education and remain current with advances in reconstructive ophthalmology.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS, MD, or an equivalent medical degree recognized by DOH Abu Dhabi.
* Completion of an accredited residency program in Ophthalmology.
* Board certification, fellowship, or an equivalent recognized qualification in Ophthalmology.
* Subspecialty fellowship or advanced training in Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Ophthalmology.
* Valid DOH Consultant License or Eligibility Letter in Ophthalmology.
* Minimum of 5-7 years of post-specialist experience in reconstructive ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery.
* Advanced expertise in eyelid reconstruction, lacrimal surgery, orbital procedures, and trauma repair.
* Demonstrated experience managing orbital diseases, eyelid malpositions, periocular tumors, and tear drainage disorders.
* Experience in a tertiary eye-care center or academic medical facility is preferred.
* Exposure to complex orbital and facial reconstructive surgery is advantageous.
* Strong diagnostic, microsurgical, clinical decision-making, and patient-management abilities.
* Excellent communication, counseling, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a multicultural healthcare environment.
* Commitment to evidence-based medicine, ethical practice, and high-quality patient care.
* Research or medical teaching experience is an advantage.
