Position Overview

The Consultant Pediatric Surgeon will provide advanced surgical care for infants, children, and adolescents with congenital, acquired, traumatic, and emergency conditions. This senior clinical position requires extensive expertise in pediatric and neonatal surgery, sound clinical judgment, and a compassionate approach to treating young patients.

The successful consultant will perform elective and emergency procedures, manage complex neonatal cases, and coordinate care with pediatric specialists and multidisciplinary teams. The role also includes surgical planning, postoperative management, family counseling, clinical governance, teaching, and quality improvement.

Job Overview

The


Consultant Pediatric Surgeon will diagnose and manage a broad spectrum of surgical conditions affecting newborns, infants, children, and adolescents. The clinical caseload may include congenital anomalies, abdominal and thoracic disorders, pediatric tumors, traumatic injuries, neonatal emergencies, and other complex surgical presentations.

The consultant will provide outpatient assessments, inpatient management, preoperative evaluation, surgical intervention, and postoperative follow-up. Close collaboration with neonatologists, pediatric intensivists, anesthetists, radiologists, oncologists, nurses, and other specialists will support safe and coordinated pediatric care.

Core Duties

* Assess, diagnose, and manage congenital, acquired, traumatic, and emergency pediatric surgical conditions.
* Conduct detailed clinical evaluations and request appropriate laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic investigations.
* Manage abdominal, thoracic, neonatal, oncological, and trauma-related pediatric surgical cases.
* Perform elective and emergency surgical procedures for infants, children, and adolescents.
* Provide advanced management for neonatal congenital malformations and complex surgical emergencies.
* Evaluate newborns requiring urgent or planned surgical intervention.
* Develop individualized preoperative, operative, and postoperative treatment plans.
* Assess surgical risks and determine appropriate intervention based on each patient\'s clinical needs.
* Provide inpatient consultations and outpatient pediatric surgery services.
* Monitor postoperative recovery and identify potential complications promptly.
* Manage pain, wound care, nutritional considerations, and follow-up requirements in coordination with relevant teams.
* Participate in emergency surgical coverage and pediatric trauma management.
* Collaborate with neonatology, pediatric intensive care, anesthesia, radiology, oncology, and other medical specialties.
* Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, clinical rounds, and complex case discussions.
* Explain diagnoses, treatment options, procedures, risks, expected outcomes, and aftercare to parents and caregivers.
* Communicate sensitively with children and adapt clinical interactions according to their age and developmental needs.
* Maintain complete, accurate, confidential, and timely medical documentation.
* Comply with DOH requirements, hospital policies, ethical standards, and clinical governance procedures.
* Maintain rigorous infection-control, surgical-safety, and patient-protection practices.
* Participate in clinical audits, research projects, quality improvement programs, and departmental meetings.
* Contribute to the teaching and supervision of junior doctors, residents, and other clinical personnel.
* Remain current with developments in pediatric surgery through Continuing Medical Education and professional training.

Required Skills and Experience

* MBBS, MD, or an equivalent medical degree recognized by DOH Abu Dhabi.
* Completion of an accredited specialist training program in Pediatric Surgery.
* Board certification, fellowship, or an equivalent recognized qualification in Pediatric Surgery.
* Valid DOH Consultant License or Eligibility Letter in Pediatric Surgery.
* Minimum of 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in a tertiary-care or academic hospital.
* Extensive experience diagnosing and treating complex pediatric surgical conditions.
* Strong expertise in neonatal surgery and the management of congenital malformations.
* Proven competence in elective, emergency, and trauma-related pediatric procedures.
* Experience managing abdominal, thoracic, oncological, and neonatal surgical cases.
* Advanced preoperative assessment, operative decision-making, and postoperative management skills.
* Ability to respond effectively to rapidly changing surgical emergencies.
* Strong understanding of pediatric infection prevention, patient safety, and surgical quality standards.
* Excellent communication and counseling skills when working with children, parents, and caregivers.
* Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary and multicultural healthcare teams.
* Experience in clinical research, medical education, or academic practice is advantageous.
