Role Context
The Consultant - Perinatal Psychiatry will provide specialist psychiatric care for women with mental health needs during reproductive planning, pregnancy, and the postpartum stage. The role combines clinical psychiatry, risk assessment, crisis intervention, family-centered counselling, and close coordination with obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, psychology, and midwifery teams. The consultant will help improve maternal mental health outcomes while supporting safer pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and early parenting pathways.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for women during pre-conception, pregnancy, and the postpartum period.
* Diagnose and manage perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and psychosis.
* Manage complex psychiatric cases involving psychotropic medication use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* Conduct structured risk assessments, crisis intervention, relapse prevention planning, and safety planning for high-risk mothers.
* Support patients with pre-existing psychiatric conditions as they transition into pregnancy and early motherhood.
* Provide counselling on reproductive planning, medication adjustment, treatment risks, relapse prevention, and mental health optimization.
* Oversee inpatient and outpatient perinatal psychiatric services with a focus on continuity of care and safe follow-up.
* Collaborate with obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, psychology, midwifery, nursing, and social support teams.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, joint perinatal clinics, complex care discussions, and shared decision-making pathways.
* Ensure compliance with DHA standards, perinatal mental health guidelines, hospital protocols, patient safety requirements, and ethical psychiatric practice.
* Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, risk notes, treatment plans, medication records, and follow-up reports.
* Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, research activities, and evidence-based service development.
* Teach and supervise residents, psychologists, nurses, midwives, and allied health staff involved in maternal and perinatal mental health care.
* Lead training sessions on early detection of perinatal psychiatric conditions, crisis response, and safe referral pathways.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification.
* Completed residency training in Psychiatry.
* Board certification such as American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or equivalent recognized qualification.
* Subspecialty training or strong clinical experience in Perinatal Psychiatry, Prenatal Psychiatry, or Women’s Mental Health.
* Eligibility for Consultant licensure with Dubai Health Authority.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-consultant experience is preferred.
* Strong expertise in psychopharmacology during pregnancy and lactation.
* Experience managing perinatal depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, psychosis, and complex maternal mental health presentations.
* Background in women’s mental health, tertiary care, high-risk obstetric settings, or joint perinatal mental health clinics will be an advantage.
* Excellent communication, counselling, risk assessment, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Ability to work sensitively with mothers, families, and clinical teams during emotionally complex situations.
* Commitment to evidence-based psychiatric care, patient safety, confidentiality, and family-centered treatment.
