Role Context
The Consultant - Perinatal Psychiatry will provide specialist psychiatric care for women experiencing mental health conditions during pre-conception, pregnancy, birth planning, postpartum recovery, and early motherhood. The role requires advanced understanding of perinatal mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, psychosis, bipolar disorder, OCD, medication safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and high-risk maternal mental health planning. The consultant will help strengthen perinatal mental health services in Dubai by delivering evidence-based care, supporting families, guiding multidisciplinary decisions, and improving early detection of psychiatric conditions in maternal care pathways.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment and management for women before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and throughout the postpartum period.
* Diagnose and treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, postpartum psychosis, and other pregnancy-related or postpartum psychiatric conditions.
* Manage complex cases involving psychotropic medication use during pregnancy, lactation, fertility planning, and breastfeeding.
* Conduct risk assessments, crisis intervention, relapse prevention planning, and safety planning for high-risk mothers and families.
* Support patients with pre-existing psychiatric conditions as they transition into pregnancy, delivery planning, postpartum care, and long-term mental health follow-up.
* Provide counselling on reproductive planning, medication adjustment, mental health optimization, treatment adherence, and family support strategies.
* Oversee inpatient and outpatient perinatal psychiatric services with clear care plans, timely reviews, and coordinated follow-up.
* Collaborate with obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, psychology, psychiatry, midwifery, nursing, social work, and allied healthcare teams.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, joint perinatal clinics, maternal mental health reviews, and complex care planning meetings.
* Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment options, medication risks and benefits, safety plans, and recovery expectations.
* Ensure compliance with perinatal mental health guidelines, DHA standards, hospital protocols, safeguarding requirements, and ethical psychiatric practice.
* Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, including assessment notes, diagnoses, risk plans, treatment plans, medication reviews, consent discussions, and follow-up records.
* Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, research activity, publications, and evidence-based practice development.
* Teach and supervise residents, psychologists, nurses, midwives, and allied health staff in perinatal mental health recognition, escalation, and management.
* Lead training sessions on perinatal mental health, early detection of psychiatric conditions, crisis response, and safe multidisciplinary referral pathways.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Completed residency training in Psychiatry.
* Subspecialty training or strong clinical experience in Perinatal Psychiatry, Prenatal Psychiatry, or women’s mental health.
* Board certification in Psychiatry, such as American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or equivalent recognized qualification.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-consultant experience is preferred.
* Strong expertise in psychopharmacology during pregnancy and lactation.
* Experience managing perinatal depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, psychosis, and high-risk maternal mental health cases.
* Experience in women’s mental health, tertiary care, high-risk obstetric settings, or integrated maternal mental health services is an advantage.
* Strong communication, counselling, risk assessment, crisis management, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Ability to work effectively with obstetric, neonatal, psychological, midwifery, nursing, and family support teams.
