Role Context
The Consultant Psychiatrist - Arabic will provide specialist psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and long-term care for patients with acute and chronic mental health conditions. The position is important for improving patient stability, relapse prevention, crisis response, medication safety, and family understanding within a multidisciplinary mental health setting. Working with psychologists, social workers, nurses, junior doctors, and allied healthcare professionals, the consultant will support safe clinical decision-making, culturally aware communication, strong governance, and compassionate psychiatric care for Arabic-speaking and multicultural patients.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess, diagnose, and manage a wide range of psychiatric disorders including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, personality disorders, trauma-related conditions, and complex mental health presentations.
* Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations using clinical interviews, mental status examinations, risk assessments, collateral history, and structured diagnostic reasoning.
* Manage acute psychiatric presentations and long-term mental health conditions across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care settings.
* Prescribe, adjust, and monitor psychotropic medications safely while reviewing treatment response, side effects, adherence, and clinical risk.
* Develop individualized treatment plans covering medication management, psychotherapy referral, supportive counseling, behavioral interventions, family education, and relapse prevention.
* Provide emergency psychiatric care and crisis intervention for high-risk patients, including those requiring urgent assessment, stabilization, or admission.
* Collaborate with psychologists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, primary care physicians, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated mental healthcare.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions, treatment planning meetings, complex case reviews, and discharge coordination.
* Provide psychotherapy and supportive counseling within scope of practice when clinically appropriate.
* Educate patients and families about psychiatric diagnoses, medication use, treatment options, warning signs, coping strategies, and preventive mental healthcare.
* Ensure compliance with ethical, legal, cultural, and clinical standards in psychiatric practice.
* Maintain accurate psychiatric records, risk assessment notes, medication plans, consent documentation, progress reviews, and follow-up reports in line with UAE healthcare licensing and facility requirements.
* Contribute to clinical governance, audits, quality improvement initiatives, mental health awareness programs, and patient education activities.
* Provide supervision, mentoring, and training to junior doctors, residents, nurses, and mental health staff.
* Support a safe, respectful, confidential, and culturally sensitive care environment for patients and families.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification in Psychiatry is mandatory.
* UK CCT, MRCPsych, or equivalent Western training is strongly preferred.
* MOHAP eligibility or UAE medical licensing eligibility for Sharjah is required.
* Minimum 5 years of experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist.
* Fluency in Arabic and English is required or strongly preferred depending on patient population.
* Strong experience providing inpatient, outpatient, and emergency psychiatric care.
* Proven ability to manage complex and high-risk psychiatric cases with sound clinical judgment.
* Strong knowledge of mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, personality disorders, risk assessment, medication management, and long-term psychiatric treatment planning.
* Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary mental health team.
* Excellent communication, leadership, supervision, patient counseling, and family education skills.
* Strong understanding of cultural sensitivity in mental health care.
