Role Context
The Automation Engineer - Control Systems will provide technical and engineering expertise for automation systems used across industrial plant operations. This position ensures that existing systems remain reliable, supported, integrated, and suitable for long-term operational needs by reviewing system obsolescence, vendor support, spare parts availability, interoperability, performance, and upgrade requirements. The role directly supports plant reliability, operational safety, process optimization, data visibility, laboratory system performance, and efficient implementation of automation improvements across ADNOC Group operations.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess existing industrial control systems, distributed control systems, process control systems, real-time plant information systems, and laboratory management systems for operational reliability and future readiness.
* Review system obsolescence, spare parts availability, vendor support status, interoperability, integration capability, and compliance with company and international standards.
* Audit the performance of automation and plant information systems to identify technical gaps, improvement opportunities, and process performance monitoring requirements.
* Recommend practical improvements that enhance system reliability, process visibility, control performance, data quality, and safe plant operation.
* Support the development and updating of technical specification documents for automation systems, plant information systems, laboratory information systems, and related applications.
* Conduct technical and economic feasibility studies to evaluate the financial and engineering viability of proposed automation applications and system upgrades.
* Develop system functional specifications, design documentation, as-built records, user manuals, and training materials for minor modifications to existing systems.
* Coordinate with site maintenance teams to support vendor engagement, system modifications, upgrades, troubleshooting, and long-term technical support.
* Provide engineering expertise to plant teams in real-time process information management systems and laboratory information management systems.
* Support optimization, alarm management, control loop performance monitoring, and higher-level manufacturing execution system applications.
* Develop scope of work documents, tender packages, technical requirements, and engineering inputs for automation-related projects and system improvements.
* Participate in technical bid evaluation to ensure proposed solutions meet company standards, system specifications, operational needs, and reliability requirements.
* Coordinate and participate in the implementation of approved automation projects, including installation, commissioning, future upgrades, and performance verification.
* Ensure automation projects and system modifications are completed within approved budgets, agreed timelines, technical requirements, and safety expectations.
* Plan, supervise, and coordinate assigned automation engineering activities to meet functional objectives and section deliverables.
* Train and develop assigned staff on automation systems, technical documentation, process control practices, and plant information system support.
* Provide input for functional budget preparation and assist in implementing approved budgets and work plans.
* Investigate and highlight significant budget variances related to automation activities to support performance tracking and cost control.
* Implement approved section and department policies, processes, systems, standards, and procedures in line with company and international requirements.
* Contribute to approved performance objectives for the function in line with the company performance framework.
* Design and implement tools and techniques that improve operational process quality, automation efficiency, system reliability, and engineering productivity.
* Identify internal process improvements against best practices and industry standards to create effective solutions for automation-related challenges.
* Comply with HSE policies, procedures, controls, applicable legislation, sustainability guidelines, international standards, best practices, and ADNOC Code of Practices.
* Provide accurate inputs for section MIS reports, progress updates, technical summaries, system performance reports, and management information requirements.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Automation Engineering, or an equivalent discipline.
* Minimum 8 years of experience in design, installation, commissioning, operations support, continuing maintenance, testing, and CS validation of automation systems.
* Experience working with automation systems in a large industrial organization, preferably within oil and gas, energy, petrochemical, or process plant environments.
* Strong knowledge of industrial control systems, distributed control systems, process control systems, real-time plant information systems, and laboratory information management systems.
* Practical understanding of system obsolescence assessment, spare parts planning, vendor support evaluation, interoperability, integration, and lifecycle management.
* Experience preparing technical specifications, functional specifications, design documentation, as-built documents, user manuals, and training materials.
* Ability to support optimization, alarm management, control loop performance monitoring, and manufacturing execution system applications.
* Experience developing scopes of work, tender documents, technical bid evaluations, and engineering recommendations for automation projects.
* Strong commissioning, installation, upgrade coordination, and technical support experience for automation and process information systems.
* Ability to coordinate with plant operations, site maintenance, vendors, contractors, engineering teams, and internal stakeholders.
* Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, reporting, and problem-solving skills.
* Good understanding of company standards, international automation standards, HSE requirements, sustainability guidelines, and safe plant operations.
* Ability to work in a complex Oil and Energy environment where system reliability, operational safety, technical accuracy, and timely delivery are essential.
