Role Context
The Drilling Engineer supports the technical planning and execution of wells from initial drilling design through suspension or abandonment. The position combines engineering analysis with operational decision-making to reduce drilling risk, maintain well integrity and improve execution efficiency. Particular attention is given to subsurface pressure, borehole stability, casing architecture, cementing performance, directional drilling and well control so that drilling activities can progress safely within approved technical and operational parameters.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare detailed drilling programs covering technical requirements, operational sequences, safety controls and execution priorities.
* Optimize drilling plans to improve operational efficiency while protecting personnel, well integrity and equipment.
* Evaluate drilling performance data and identify technical or procedural opportunities to reduce inefficiencies.
* Develop and apply improved drilling techniques and technologies suited to specific well conditions and operational objectives.
* Lead technical troubleshooting when drilling problems, equipment limitations or unexpected downhole conditions affect operations.
* Review casing design and recommend suitable specifications and materials according to well loads, pressures and drilling conditions.
* Analyze pore pressure, subsurface pressure behavior and other well parameters that influence safe drilling execution.
* Evaluate borehole stability and rock mechanics information to anticipate drilling risks and maintain wellbore integrity.
* Develop and review cementing programs to achieve effective zonal isolation and long-term well integrity.
* Assess cementing execution requirements and verify that proposed operations are appropriate for well conditions.
* Plan directional drilling requirements and review well trajectories against approved drilling objectives.
* Develop and supervise anticollision strategies to maintain safe separation between existing and planned wellbores.
* Provide engineering guidance during drilling execution and recommend corrective measures when actual conditions deviate from the approved program.
* Review operational hazards and contribute technical input to drilling risk assessments.
* Develop and advise on blowout contingency measures to strengthen preparedness for well control events.
* Apply established well control principles when evaluating drilling programs, hazards and operational decisions.
* Prepare technically compliant well suspension programs when drilling activities require temporary cessation.
* Develop abandonment plans that address well integrity and applicable industry requirements.
* Coordinate with drilling operations, subsurface, well engineering and other technical disciplines to resolve well delivery challenges.
* Capture operational lessons and incorporate relevant findings into future drilling designs and optimization initiatives.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor\'s Degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
* Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in drilling engineering or closely related well operations.
* Valid Well Control certification such as IWCF or IADC is required.
* Additional professional certification related to drilling or well operations is advantageous.
* Practical experience preparing and reviewing drilling programs.
* Strong understanding of drilling engineering calculations, operational planning and well integrity requirements.
* Experience with casing design, material selection and casing program evaluation.
* Knowledge of cementing design and operational requirements for maintaining well integrity.
* Understanding of pore pressure, borehole stability and rock mechanics principles.
