Role Context
The Instrument Engineer - Maintenance will provide specialist technical expertise for site resources, downtime analysis, preventive maintenance planning, and execution of major activities related to instrumentation and control systems. This position supports plant reliability by diagnosing equipment failures, guiding corrective actions, managing spares requirements, coordinating shutdown maintenance, and contributing to new project reviews. The role has direct impact on safe plant operations, system availability, maintenance efficiency, spare parts control, shutdown readiness, cost optimization, and long-term equipment reliability.
Key Responsibilities
* Supervise installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and modification activities for instrument and control equipment and systems across the plant.
* Ensure instrument and control maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in line with approved company procedures and engineering standards.
* Review preventive maintenance plans and schedules for instrument and control systems to improve reliability, availability, and maintainability.
* Prepare task lists, maintenance programs, and work packages for plant instrumentation and control equipment.
* Supervise execution of preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and planned maintenance programs.
* Diagnose instrument and control system faults, analyze failures, and carry out root cause failure analysis for recurring and critical equipment issues.
* Identify reasons for equipment failure and recommend practical remedial measures to prevent repeat incidents.
* Study and carry out residual life assessments for critical instrument and control equipment and recommend corrective actions where required.
* Provide technical guidance on chronic problems affecting instrumentation, control systems, reliability, process stability, and safe operations.
* Review requirements for major repairs, equipment replacement, and spares replacement to ensure plant systems remain compliant and reliable.
* Ensure instrument and control equipment is maintained according to internationally recognized engineering standards and company expectations.
* Participate in risk assessment exercises and prepare recommendations, action plans, and technical guidelines to close identified findings.
* Ensure availability of required spare parts and coordinate new material orders with relevant teams.
* Create proposals for stocking spares for new equipment and support spare parts control activities.
* Prepare item change requests, review spare inventory requirements, and support deletion of unwanted or obsolete inventory items.
* Prepare new maintenance procedures and method statements for new activities, special tasks, shutdown jobs, and long-term maintenance work.
* Schedule long-term maintenance activities in line with plant shutdown plans and operational priorities.
* Plan and coordinate maintenance activities with other departments and sections to optimize manpower, resources, tools, and plant availability.
* Support planning and control of major and minor shutdown activities, including cost, manpower, material, and execution requirements.
* Monitor maintenance expenditures linked to assigned activities and support cost-conscious execution of instrument and control maintenance work.
* Provide technical support for development, implementation, and commissioning of new projects.
* Review design inputs, technical specifications, and project documentation to optimize costs and ensure compliance with standards and best practices.
* Prepare new Plant Change Requests and review proposed change requests for technical feasibility, implementation impact, schedule, and maintenance requirements.
* Develop plans and schedules for implementation of approved plant changes related to instrumentation and control systems.
* Analyze site resource utilization and downtime trends to identify opportunities for improved maintenance performance.
* Coordinate with operations, maintenance, engineering, procurement, projects, shutdown teams, and vendors to resolve technical and execution challenges.
* Maintain accurate maintenance records, technical reports, failure analysis documents, spare parts updates, and activity progress information.
* Support safe operations by ensuring instrumentation and control systems remain reliable, properly maintained, and ready for plant operating requirements.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor Degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Control Engineering, or an equivalent discipline.
* Minimum 8 years of experience in instrument and control maintenance.
* Strong experience in installation, troubleshooting, repair, preventive maintenance, and modification of plant instrument and control systems.
* Practical knowledge of maintenance planning, task list preparation, preventive maintenance schedules, method statements, and shutdown maintenance activities.
* Strong ability to diagnose failures, perform root cause failure analysis, and recommend corrective actions for instrument and control equipment.
* Experience with residual life assessment of critical instrument and control equipment.
* Good understanding of internationally recognized engineering standards related to instrumentation, control systems, maintenance, safety, and reliability.
* Ability to identify chronic technical problems and provide practical guidance on repair, replacement, maintenance strategy, and spares planning.
* Experience with spare parts control, material ordering, proposal for stocking spares, item change requests, and inventory optimization.
* Knowledge of risk assessment processes and the ability to prepare technical recommendations and guidelines.
* Experience supporting new project development, design review, specification review, implementation, commissioning, and plant change requests.
* Ability to coordinate with operations, maintenance, engineering, projects, procurement, vendors, and shutdown teams.
* Strong planning, organizing, scheduling, coordination, checking, reporting, and technical documentation skills.
* Good understanding of safe work practices, plant reliability requirements, shutdown execution, and oil and gas operating discipline.
* Strong communication, analytical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
