- About the Role
As an NDT Technician, you will be responsible for performing Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) using advanced techniques such as ET, IRIS, Thermography, PMI, and RT film interpretation. You will ensure compliance with international codes and standards, identify abnormalities in equipment, and report findings for further evaluation. Additionally, you will assist the Lead Plant Inspector in report generation, work-order management, and ensure effective supervision of contractor NDT technicians to maintain quality standards and timely completion of tasks.
This role also involves ensuring adherence to QAFCO’s Occupational Health, Quality, Safety, and Environmental procedures while supporting the implementation of ISO 17020 standards.
- Key Responsibilities
- Perform assigned NDT activities using advanced techniques (ET, IRIS, Thermography, PMI, RT film interpretation) independently, ensuring timely and high-quality completion.
- Supervise contractor NDT technicians during online and shutdown inspections to ensure quality and adherence to schedules.
- Complete standard reports and work sheets to help superiors monitor work progress and provide updates on inspection activities.
- Carry out at least one of the following tasks: stores incoming material inspection, lifting equipment inspection, and metallography sample preparation.
- Apply technical expertise to solve problems encountered during inspections and escalate complex issues when necessary.
- Maintain records of inspection activities and update online systems regularly. Ensure hard copies of approved reports are properly filed.
- Assist the Lead Plant Inspector in generating reports, entering work-order time, and closing work orders.
- Ensure the availability, proper use, and maintenance of tools, equipment, consumables, and spares to preserve their value and prolong their lifespan.
- Initiate and secure approval for work permits to facilitate task execution while ensuring compliance with safety and environmental protocols.
- Identify potential issues and report equipment status to prevent malfunctions and ensure reliability.
- Participate in the on-the-job training of new and trainee technicians to help them develop the necessary skills for independent inspection work.
- Support the effective implementation of all relevant clauses of ISO 17020 within the assigned area of responsibility.
- Adhere to housekeeping procedures to maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Desired Candidate Profile
- Diploma in Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineering with specialized training in basic NDT techniques.
- Certified in UT and RT, ASNT Level II.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a large chemical plant, preferably in ammonia and urea fertilizer plants.
- Ability to read P&IDs and isometric drawings.
- In-depth knowledge of various NDT techniques, including:
- Radiographic testing (RT), infrared thermography testing (IRTT), magnetic particle testing (MPT), ultrasonic testing (UT), and liquid penetrant testing (LPT).
- Inspection techniques for pipelines and coatings, and proficiency in using visual inspection tools.
- Familiarity with welding inspection requirements, internationally recognized welding certifying authorities, and welder certification.
- Strong understanding of the hazards of radioactive elements and the processes for safe radiographic testing.
