Role Context
The Principal Geophysicist serves as a senior technical authority connecting seismic interpretation, reservoir characterization, static modelling and field development decision-making. The position provides independent assurance that geophysical studies meet company standards, seismic uncertainty is properly understood and emerging technologies are applied where they can improve reservoir evaluation. Through integration with geology, reservoir engineering, drilling and geomechanics, the role helps strengthen subsurface understanding and improve development decisions across complex hydrocarbon assets.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide expert technical advice to Subsurface and Drilling teams on geophysics, seismic interpretation and reservoir characterization.
* Maintain active engagement with shareholders, technical partners and industry specialists on advances in geophysical technology and exploration methods.
* Track developments in seismic processing, interpretation, reservoir modelling, software and specialist hardware.
* Advise asset teams on technical studies that directly influence Full Field Development Plans.
* Review geophysical methodologies and recommend technologies capable of improving subsurface evaluation and development planning.
* Promote effective integration of geophysics with geology, reservoir engineering, drilling and other subsurface disciplines.
* Provide technical assurance that geophysical studies comply with established company standards.
* Evaluate seismic uncertainty and ensure its impact is adequately reflected in subsurface interpretations and development decisions.
* Review major geophysical activities associated with reservoir development and reservoir management.
* Guide seismic reservoir characterization studies used to construct and update 3D geological models.
* Integrate seismic interpretation results with static reservoir modelling workflows.
* Apply advanced seismic attributes to constrain reservoir architecture, facies distribution and geological model frameworks.
* Use sequence stratigraphic principles to improve seismic interpretation and strengthen static model construction.
* Support reservoir monitoring and management through technologies such as 4D seismic.
* Evaluate borehole seismic monitoring applications for reservoir surveillance and development optimization.
* Assess cross-well seismic and other advanced monitoring technologies where they can improve reservoir understanding.
* Conduct or review regional seismic interpretation supporting exploration and appraisal strategies.
* Integrate seismic information with well data, geological interpretation and geomechanical studies.
* Assess implications of integrated subsurface findings for reservoir management and field development.
* Provide technical recommendations on exploration and appraisal opportunities based on regional seismic understanding.
* Challenge interpretation assumptions and identify technical uncertainties that could materially influence hydrocarbon resource evaluation.
* Review seismic inputs used in reservoir development concepts and field planning decisions.
* Advise leadership and shareholders on significant geophysical findings, risks and uncertainties.
* Support knowledge sharing across technical teams by promoting lessons learned and advanced interpretation practices.
* Mentor geoscientists and less experienced technical professionals in seismic interpretation and integrated subsurface evaluation.
* Encourage adoption of fit-for-purpose geophysical software and hardware that improves analysis quality and efficiency.
* Contribute to multidisciplinary technical reviews involving geoscience, reservoir engineering and drilling.
* Support development of technically robust workflows for seismic interpretation and reservoir characterization.
* Present complex geophysical conclusions clearly to management, technical committees and multidisciplinary stakeholders.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor Degree or Master Degree in Geophysics, Geology or a closely related geoscience discipline.
* Minimum 15 years of varied Oil and Gas industry experience.
* At least 3 years of experience in a supervisory, leadership or senior technical authority role.
* Extensive experience in geophysical interpretation within operational Oil and Gas environments.
* Strong expertise in seismic interpretation and reservoir characterization.
* Advanced understanding of static reservoir modelling and integration of seismic information into geological models.
* Experience supporting Full Field Development Plans and reservoir development studies.
* Strong knowledge of exploration and appraisal workflows.
* Practical experience integrating seismic, well, geological and geomechanical information.
* Advanced understanding of sequence stratigraphy and its use in seismic interpretation.
* Experience applying seismic attributes to reservoir modelling workflows.
* Knowledge of 4D seismic and reservoir monitoring applications.
* Familiarity with borehole seismic and cross-well monitoring technologies.
* Ability to evaluate uncertainty in seismic interpretation and communicate its impact on development decisions.
* Experience providing technical assurance and reviewing complex multidisciplinary subsurface studies.
