Role Context
The Principal Welding Engineer leads welding engineering discipline execution and provides advanced metallurgical and welding consultancy across fabrication, offshore installation, and subsea pipeline projects. This role ensures welding procedures, qualifications, consumables, and technical standards are fully aligned with project requirements, international codes, and customer expectations while supporting continuous improvement and innovation in welding technologies.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the welding engineering discipline and provide metallurgical consultancy for offshore and onshore project execution
* Prepare and manage Project Welding Qualification Execution Plans covering weld procedures, schedules, materials, and consumables
* Review and approve all project weld procedures through coordination with customers and certifying authorities
* Select suitable electrodes and consumables based on chemical, physical, corrosion, and weldability requirements
* Review project schedules, material control reports, and consumable estimates to update welding execution strategies
* Manage welding school facilities for workforce training, welding methodology improvement, and workmanship standards
* Support the development and implementation of automatic welding systems and advanced welding technologies
* Prepare estimates and technical input for bids, tenders, and project proposals
* Complete project-specific welding consumable estimation, requisitioning, and DOE consumable forecasting
* Conduct readiness reviews for critical offshore campaigns and fabrication activities
* Work with fabrication management, marine teams, and technical groups on welding research and development initiatives
* Maintain technical relationships with global welding organizations, certifying bodies, and equipment manufacturers for latest technology updates
* Investigate welding, metallurgical, and quality-related failures and provide fit-for-purpose corrective solutions
* Initiate fit-for-purpose evaluations for nonconforming work and support quality resolution
* Evaluate performance, training needs, and development plans for Welding Engineers within the team
* Visit vendor facilities for technical evaluations and support supplier qualification processes
Ideal Profile
* MS, MTech, or ME in Welding Engineering preferred
* BS, BE, or BTech in Welding, Metallurgy, or Mechanical Engineering
* International Welding Engineer or European Welding Engineer Degree is mandatory
* Minimum 8 years of experience in welding engineering, metallurgy, materials, and subsea pipeline projects
* Strong expertise in offshore fabrication, welding procedures, metallurgy, and welding quality systems
* Experience working with certifying authorities such as DNV, TWI, EWI, and global welding technology groups
* Professional engineering membership such as CEng, Senior Member Welding Institute, or equivalent preferred
* Welding inspection qualifications and strong technical leadership skills are highly valued
