Role Context
The Senior Commissioning Engineer supports the controlled movement of project systems from construction completion through pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up, and performance testing. The position combines home office preparation with site-based technical execution, helping ensure procedures, spares, consumables, testing records, and system handover requirements are properly developed and followed. By resolving technical issues early, coordinating discipline interfaces, and supervising site activity, this role helps reduce commissioning risk, improve start-up reliability, and support smooth delivery of energy facilities.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the Commissioning Manager and Principal Commissioning Engineer in preparing home office commissioning deliverables.
* Participate in site walk-down inspections to verify installation progress, system readiness, safety conditions, and outstanding work.
* Prepare, review, and follow up punch list items that may affect pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up, or performance testing.
* Assist in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation component issues during site execution.
* Work with project teams and client representatives to maintain clear communication and positive working relationships.
* Support the development and maintenance of operation and maintenance manuals.
* Assist with commissioning and start-up spares planning to ensure required items are available before execution.
* Help prepare first fills and consumables requirements for assigned systems and commissioning packages.
* Develop, review, and support the implementation of commissioning and start-up procedures.
* Perform discipline equipment system checks, inspections, and tests in line with approved project procedures.
* Support functional testing of mechanical, electrical, and instrument systems.
* Participate in commissioning, start-up, and performance testing activities for assigned systems.
* Resolve operational and maintenance issues identified during commissioning, start-up, or performance test phases.
* Supervise craft personnel involved in site pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
* Coordinate daily activities with commissioning engineers and other members of the commissioning team.
* Liaise with discipline lead engineers, project engineers, construction teams, fabrication teams, completions specialists, designers, and operations and maintenance personnel.
* Ensure commissioning activities are carried out within company policies, project guidelines, safety requirements, and approved discipline procedures.
* Communicate technical solutions, system expectations, and commissioning priorities clearly to engineers and non-engineers.
* Keep commissioning documentation, test records, punch list updates, progress information, and handover files organized and current.
* Support travel to construction sites and international project locations when required by assignment needs.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering.
* 8-15 years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor, consultant, EPC organization, or project delivery environment.
* Minimum 5 years of experience in a chemical, refinery, oil and gas processing, or similar industrial facility.
* Previous commissioning and start-up experience in the chemical, refinery, or oil and gas industry is preferred.
* Good understanding of commissioning, completions, start-up, training, construction, operations, and maintenance practices.
* Practical experience with site walk-downs, punch listing, system checks, functional testing, troubleshooting, and performance testing.
* Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems used in energy and process facilities.
* Ability to apply industry knowledge to improve commissioning effectiveness, system readiness, and execution quality.
* Strong communication skills for explaining technical concepts to engineers, craft teams, clients, and non-technical stakeholders.
* Good computer software skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
* Organized working style with the flexibility to support different discipline groups and shifting project priorities.
* Ability to assess project requirements and communicate expectations in a clear, positive, and productive manner.
* Willingness to travel to construction sites and international project locations when assigned.
* Proficiency in written and spoken English.
* Multi-language skills are an advantage.
