Role Context
The Senior Commissioning Engineer supports the safe and structured transition of project systems from construction and fabrication into testing, commissioning, start-up, and performance validation. The position connects engineering, completions, construction, operations, maintenance, and client requirements to ensure systems are prepared, checked, tested, and handed over with reliable documentation and clear technical control. By resolving commissioning issues, supervising craft personnel, coordinating with discipline teams, and supporting site execution, this role helps reduce start-up risk, improve system readiness, and protect project delivery schedules.
Key Responsibilities
* Report to the Commissioning Manager and support the Principal Commissioning Engineer in preparing home office commissioning deliverables.
* Participate in site walk-down inspections, punch listing, system verification, and commissioning readiness checks.
* Support testing and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation components that may arise during project execution.
* Work closely with the project team and client representatives to maintain positive, practical, and solution-focused relationships.
* Assist in the development of operation and maintenance manuals required for commissioning and start-up readiness.
* Support the preparation of commissioning and start-up spare parts requirements.
* Help develop first fills, consumables lists, commissioning plans, and start-up support documentation.
* Prepare, review, and support execution of commissioning and start-up procedures.
* Carry out discipline equipment system checks, inspections, functional checks, and related testing activities.
* Support function testing of mechanical, electrical, and instrument systems.
* Participate in commissioning, start-up, and performance testing activities across assigned project systems.
* Resolve operational and maintenance issues identified during commissioning, start-up, and performance tests.
* Supervise craft personnel required for site pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
* Coordinate work with commissioning engineers, discipline leads, project engineers, construction teams, fabrication teams, completions specialists, and operations and maintenance personnel.
* Ensure commissioning activities follow approved project guidelines, company policies, safety expectations, and discipline procedures.
* Share technical and practical commissioning knowledge with less experienced colleagues and support team capability development.
* Assess project requirements and communicate expectations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Support international site assignments when required and adapt to changing discipline, site, and project priorities.
* Help identify commissioning risks, execution constraints, system interface issues, and corrective actions before they affect start-up progress.
* Maintain organized records, technical updates, test information, and commissioning documentation for project reporting and handover.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering.
* 8-15 years of oil and gas experience with a major contractor, consultant, or project delivery organization.
* Minimum 5 years of experience in a chemical, refinery, oil and gas processing, or similar industrial facility.
* Previous commissioning and start-up experience in the chemical, refinery, or oil and gas industry is preferred.
* Strong understanding of commissioning concepts, completions processes, start-up practices, and training requirements.
* Basic working knowledge of related functions such as construction, fabrication, operations, and maintenance.
* Ability to apply industry knowledge to improve commissioning effectiveness and project execution.
* Practical exposure to mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems during testing, troubleshooting, and start-up.
* Able to communicate technical solutions and commissioning concepts clearly to engineers and non-engineers.
* Good computer software skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
* Strong organizational skills with the ability to adapt to the needs of different discipline groups.
* Ability to assess project requirements and communicate expectations in a clear, positive, and productive manner.
* Willing and able to travel to construction sites and international project locations when assigned.
* Good written and spoken English communication skills.
* Multi-language ability is an advantage.
