Role Context
The Senior Commissioning Engineer supports the final technical stage of project delivery by helping systems move from construction completion into tested, operational, and performance-ready condition. The position combines home office preparation with site-based commissioning execution, including walk-downs, punch listing, functional testing, start-up support, and issue resolution. By coordinating between commissioning, completions, construction, fabrication, engineering, operations, maintenance, and client teams, this role helps reduce start-up risk, improve system readiness, and ensure project requirements are clearly understood and delivered.
Key Responsibilities
* Report to the Commissioning Manager and support the Principal Commissioning Engineer with home office deliverables.
* Prepare and contribute to commissioning documentation required for planning, site execution, system readiness, and handover.
* Participate in site walk-down inspections to verify installation status, system condition, access readiness, and commissioning requirements.
* Support punch listing activities and help drive closure of items affecting testing, pre-commissioning, commissioning, or start-up progress.
* Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation component issues that arise during site commissioning activities.
* Work closely with project teams and client representatives to maintain constructive, transparent, and practical working relationships.
* Support the development of operation and maintenance manuals for project systems.
* Assist with commissioning and start-up spares planning to ensure required materials are available for execution.
* Support preparation of first fills and consumables needed for pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start-up activities.
* Develop, review, and assist with implementation of commissioning and start-up procedures.
* Carry out discipline equipment system checks and tests in accordance with approved project procedures.
* Support functional testing of mechanical, electrical, and instrument systems.
* Participate in commissioning, start-up, and performance testing activities across assigned systems and work scopes.
* Resolve operational and maintenance issues identified during commissioning, start-up, and performance testing phases.
* Supervise craft personnel required for site pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
* Coordinate work with commissioning engineers, completions specialists, operations and maintenance specialists, designers, and support personnel.
* Liaise with discipline lead engineers, project engineers, construction teams, and fabrication teams to resolve technical and execution issues.
* Ensure commissioning activities are completed within approved guidelines, project policies, safety requirements, and discipline procedures.
* Communicate technical expectations clearly to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
* Support international construction site assignments when required by project execution needs.
* Maintain organized records for commissioning progress, test results, punch list status, issue logs, and handover documentation.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering.
* 8-15 years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor, consultant, EPC company, or project delivery organization.
* Minimum 5 years of experience in a chemical, refinery, oil and gas processing, or similar industrial facility.
* Previous commissioning and start-up experience in the chemical, refinery, or oil and gas industry is preferred.
* Strong understanding of commissioning, completions, start-up, training, construction, operations, and maintenance principles.
* Practical experience with walk-down inspections, punch lists, system checks, functional testing, troubleshooting, and performance testing.
* Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems used in process or energy facilities.
* Ability to apply industry knowledge to improve commissioning planning, execution quality, and system readiness.
* Clear communication skills for explaining technical concepts to engineers, craft teams, clients, and non-technical stakeholders.
* Good computer software skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
* Strong organizational ability with flexibility to support different discipline groups and changing project priorities.
* Ability to assess project requirements and communicate expectations in a clear, positive, and productive manner.
* Willingness to travel to construction sites and international project locations as required.
* Proficiency in written and spoken English.
* Multi-language skills are an advantage.
