Role Context
The Senior Commissioning Engineer helps move project systems from construction completion into safe, tested, and operational readiness. This position supports home office deliverables, site commissioning execution, equipment checks, start-up preparation, and technical issue resolution across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems. By coordinating with commissioning managers, discipline engineers, construction teams, fabrication teams, clients, and operations specialists, the role improves system readiness, reduces start-up delays, and strengthens the quality of project handover.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the Commissioning Manager and Principal Commissioning Engineer with home office commissioning deliverables.
* Participate in site walk-down inspections to confirm construction completion, system readiness, and safe access for commissioning work.
* Prepare, track, and support closure of punch list items affecting commissioning and start-up progress.
* Assist with testing and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation components during project execution.
* Work closely with the project team and client representatives to maintain clear communication and productive working relationships.
* Support the development of operation and maintenance manuals required for commissioning and start-up activities.
* Assist in defining commissioning and start-up spares required for reliable system preparation.
* Help prepare first fills, consumables lists, and related start-up support requirements.
* Develop, review, and support implementation of commissioning and start-up procedures.
* Perform discipline equipment system checks and tests in line with approved procedures and project requirements.
* Support function testing of mechanical, electrical, and instrument systems.
* Participate in commissioning, start-up, and performance testing activities across assigned systems.
* Resolve operational and maintenance issues identified during commissioning, start-up, and performance test phases.
* Supervise craft personnel involved in site pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
* Coordinate daily work with commissioning engineers, completions specialists, operation and maintenance specialists, designers, and support personnel.
* Interface with discipline lead engineers, project engineers, construction teams, and fabrication teams to resolve system handover and testing issues.
* Apply approved guidelines, company policies, safety requirements, and commissioning discipline procedures during all activities.
* Share practical commissioning knowledge with less experienced engineers and support team development.
* Maintain organized commissioning documentation, progress updates, test records, issue logs, and handover support information.
* Support international construction site assignments when required by project needs.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering.
* 8-15 years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor, consultant, EPC company, or project delivery organization.
* Minimum 5 years of experience in a chemical, refinery, oil and gas processing, or similar industrial facility.
* Previous commissioning and start-up experience in the chemical, refinery, or oil and gas industry is preferred.
* Solid understanding of commissioning, completions, start-up, training, construction, operations, and maintenance concepts.
* Practical exposure to site walk-downs, punch listing, system checks, functional testing, troubleshooting, and performance testing.
* Ability to communicate technical concepts and practical solutions clearly to engineers and non-engineers.
* Good computer software skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
* Strong organizational skills with the ability to support multiple discipline groups and changing site priorities.
* Ability to assess project requirements and explain expectations in a clear, positive, and productive manner.
* Willingness to travel to construction sites and international project locations when assigned.
* Proficiency in written and spoken English.
* Multi-language skills are an advantage.
* Adaptable, safety-conscious, and comfortable working in demanding project environments.
* Ability to supervise craft personnel and coordinate with commissioning, construction, fabrication, and operations teams.
