Role Context
The Senior Hook-Up Engineer provides discipline leadership during one of the most execution-intensive phases of an offshore project. The position converts engineering information, materials, construction work packs, commissioning priorities, and offshore constraints into a practical sequence of activities that allows the facility to progress safely from installation through completion.
Success depends on more than technical engineering knowledge. The role must continuously align construction, fabrication, materials, commissioning, planning, procurement, warehouse, quality, and offshore execution teams so that each workfront is technically ready and supported by the correct resources.
The engineer also plays an important role in constructability, risk reduction, and offshore productivity. Early identification of interface issues, material gaps, design discrepancies, access limitations, or commissioning conflicts can prevent costly delays once personnel and equipment have mobilized offshore.
Key Responsibilities

* Incorporate commissioning and completion requirements into construction planning where applicable.
* Develop the Work Breakdown Structure for assigned discipline scope.
* Align WBS activities with construction work packs, schedules, materials, and completion requirements.
* Review construction work packs for the respective discipline.
* Verify that work packs comply with project specifications, approved engineering documentation, and construction requirements.
* Identify missing information, technical conflicts, or execution constraints before work is released.
* Develop discipline-specific Hook-Up schedules.
* Sequence offshore activities to maximize workfront availability and minimize interference between disciplines.
* Synchronize planned work with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, structural, piping, commissioning, and marine activities.
* Coordinate Hook-Up schedules with overall project milestones.
* Participate in pre-engineering surveys.
* Support pre-construction surveys to validate site conditions and execution assumptions.
* Participate in post-installation surveys where required.
* Record survey findings and ensure relevant actions are incorporated into planning and engineering deliverables.
* Develop and maintain the constructability log.
* Identify constructability constraints affecting installation, access, lifting, materials, interfaces, or sequencing.
* Assign or coordinate actions required to close constructability issues.
* Monitor outstanding constructability actions on a weekly basis.
* Escalate unresolved items that could affect offshore mobilization or execution.
* Review discipline design Material Take-Offs.
* Verify MTO quantities against Hook-Up requirements.
* Assess material allowances required for offshore contingencies.
* Identify shortages or discrepancies before mobilization.
* Review material requisitions before purchase to ensure compliance with project specifications.
* Coordinate with procurement and project teams on material availability and delivery priorities.
* Track delivery of required materials to yards, ports, offshore locations, or other designated sites.
* Liaise with warehouse personnel to confirm material receipt status.
* Verify that required Quality inspection clearances have been obtained before materials are released for use.
* Coordinate with fabrication teams and accept handover of fabricated project materials.
* Track loose-shipped materials required for offshore Hook-Up activities.
* Liaise with the Hook-Up materials team to verify material bags and tags.
* Confirm that material identification and allocation correspond with applicable Hook-Up job cards.
* Support material segregation and workfront preparation before offshore mobilization.
* Develop detailed Hook-Up execution plans for offshore and related onshore activities.
* Establish practical execution strategies considering access, resources, system priorities, materials, equipment, and interfaces.
* Review construction methodology and identify opportunities for improved sequencing or productivity.
* Provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
* Review technical work prepared by less experienced personnel when assigned.
* Ensure junior engineers understand project requirements, priorities, and quality expectations.
* Coordinate with project management teams regarding engineering and execution priorities.
* Work with procurement teams to ensure critical equipment, materials, and services are available according to schedule.
* Identify resource constraints that could affect planned Hook-Up work.
* Assist in prioritizing resources according to critical workfronts.

* Monitor implementation of agreed risk controls during construction.
* Ensure Hook-Up execution complies with approved project requirements.
* Apply relevant industry standards, including API and ISO requirements where applicable.
* Review technical documentation for compliance with engineering and construction requirements.
* Incorporate environmental and sustainability requirements into planning where relevant to the work scope.
* Monitor daily Hook-Up progress.
* Provide accurate progress information to planning personnel.
* Compare completed work against job cards and planned activities.
* Ensure progress measurement reflects the agreed methodology.
* Review Hook-Up progress registers for assigned discipline scope.
* Confirm alignment between progress registers and corresponding Hook-Up job cards.

* Travel to offshore project locations as required.
* Visit onshore fabrication yards and other project facilities to coordinate scope and resolve interfaces.
* Address discipline-related technical issues arising between engineering, fabrication, construction, and offshore teams.
* Analyze drawings, specifications, work packs, and technical documents to identify discrepancies.
* Develop practical corrective solutions to engineering or construction problems.
* Raise technical queries or coordinate design clarification where required.
* Support continuous improvement by capturing lessons learned from Hook-Up activities.
* Apply discipline knowledge to reduce rework, improve offshore productivity, and streamline construction execution.
* Participate in Toolbox Talks before field activities.
* Ensure Permit to Work requirements are understood and satisfied before work begins.
* Verify that assigned construction activities comply with approved PTW controls.
* Maintain compliance with McDermott QHSES policies throughout Hook-Up preparation and execution.
* Promote safe work practices while maintaining focus on quality, productivity, and schedule performance.
* Support effective communication between offshore personnel, onshore teams, clients, vendors, and project stakeholders.
Ideal Profile
A Bachelor\'s degree in Engineering is required, preferably in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or another discipline relevant to offshore construction. Equivalent industry experience may also be considered where appropriate.
Candidates should have more than 10 years of experience in offshore engineering, construction, Hook-Up, commissioning support, or closely related project environments.
Strong understanding of offshore Hook-Up methodology is essential, including job card preparation, construction work packs, work sequencing, material management, constructability reviews, offshore readiness, and commissioning interfaces.
The preferred candidate will have practical knowledge of API, ISO, and other standards relevant to offshore construction activities.
Experience developing Work Breakdown Structures, construction schedules, progress registers, and execution plans is important.
Candidates should be comfortable interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, MTOs, material requisitions, and construction documentation.
Strong material coordination capability is required because offshore execution depends heavily on accurate forecasting, inspection clearance, bagging, tagging, fabrication handover, and availability of contingency materials.
The role requires practical experience working across fabrication yards, ports, offshore facilities, and other dynamic construction environments.
Candidates should understand Permit to Work systems, Toolbox Talks, risk assessments, and QHSES requirements associated with offshore construction.
Proficiency with project management, planning, scheduling, and progress tracking software is expected.
Strong communication skills are required for interaction with engineering disciplines, superintendents, construction crews, project management, commissioning teams, procurement personnel, warehouse teams, clients, and vendors.
Leadership capability is important because the Senior Hook-Up Engineer may guide junior engineers and provide technical direction to field personnel.
The successful candidate should demonstrate sound decision-making under pressure and be able to prioritize resources and technical actions when multiple workfronts compete for attention.
Professional project management certification such as PMI or equivalent training would be an advantage.
