Key Responsibilities
* Prepare ingredients, utensils, appliances, demonstration materials, and other resources required for Food Preparation and Nutrition lessons.
* Follow instructions from the Head of Food and Nutrition and coordinate preparation according to lesson schedules and departmental priorities.
* Ensure practical workstations are organised, clean, safe, and ready before students enter the food laboratory.
* Check ovens, refrigerators, mixers, cookers, preparation tools, and other equipment to confirm they are fit for purpose.
* Report faults, damage, shortages, and safety concerns promptly and support the coordination of repairs or replacement.
* Clean, maintain, and store food preparation equipment according to hygiene procedures and manufacturer guidance.
* Monitor ingredient levels, consumables, cleaning materials, and departmental supplies.
* Maintain accurate stock records and arrange timely replenishment within approved budgets.
* Check deliveries for quantity, condition, expiry dates, and compliance with purchase requirements.
* Store food safely using appropriate temperature controls, labelling, rotation, and separation procedures.
* Apply effective stock rotation practices to minimise waste and prevent expired ingredients from being used.
* Support teachers and students during practical activities when technical assistance is required.
* Help maintain safe working routines and reinforce correct food hygiene and equipment-use practices.
* Prepare materials for demonstrations, assessments, enrichment activities, and special departmental projects.
* Complete basic administrative work including stock sheets, purchase records, equipment inventories, and departmental documentation.
* Assist with budgeting and sourcing suitable ingredients, tools, and materials while achieving appropriate value.
* Maintain orderly storage rooms, preparation areas, refrigerators, freezers, and food laboratories.
* Ensure cleaning schedules and end-of-session procedures are completed consistently.
* Dispose of food waste and damaged materials safely and responsibly.
* Liaise with departmental leadership to ensure technical support is matched to curriculum and lesson requirements.
* Contribute to extracurricular activities connected with food, nutrition, cooking, health, or student enrichment.
* Attend staff briefings and required training in safeguarding, child protection, food safety, and workplace health and safety.
* Follow the school\'s staff dress code, identification requirements, computer Acceptable Use Policy, and site access procedures.
* Support the school\'s improvement priorities, departmental targets, and self-evaluation activities.
* Undertake additional responsibilities appropriate to the scope and level of the position.
Ideal Profile
* Level 2 certificate in Food Hygiene and Safety or an equivalent recognised qualification.
* Relevant experience or vocational qualification in food preparation, catering, nutrition, food technology, or a related discipline.
* First aid qualification is desirable.
* Previous experience working in a school or supporting children and young people.
* Practical experience within a food technology department, commercial kitchen, catering operation, or food production environment.
* Strong understanding of food hygiene, allergen awareness, safe storage, cleaning, and contamination prevention.
* Knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations relevant to food laboratories and kitchen environments.
* Experience managing ingredients, equipment, consumables, and departmental stock.
* Ability to purchase resources within an agreed budget and maintain accurate spending records.
* Confidence working with food preparation appliances, hand tools, storage equipment, and cleaning systems.
* Ability to remain organised and productive in a busy practical teaching environment.
* Capacity to manage competing priorities and complete preparations within fixed lesson deadlines.
* Willingness to respond flexibly, support colleagues, and contribute beyond routine duties when required.
