Role
Plant turnarounds require detailed preparation because large volumes of inspection, maintenance, repair, and contractor work must be completed within a tightly controlled shutdown period. Incomplete scopes or poor coordination can affect safety, schedule, cost, and future plant reliability.
The Turnaround Engineer will connect technical stakeholders, maintenance teams, procurement, engineering, contractors, vendors, and OEM specialists. Strong planning and execution monitoring will help ensure that equipment objectives are achieved before the facility returns to service.
Key Responsibilities
The role will coordinate turnaround preparation, technical contracting, field-execution monitoring, close-out, and continuous improvement.
* Review work scopes for equipment identified for turnaround maintenance.
* Coordinate OEM and vendor input needed to establish technical requirements.
* Evaluate alternative maintenance approaches with responsible equipment specialists.
* Recommend solutions that reduce technical, schedule, and execution risk.
* Contribute to turnaround-budget preparation for the assigned area.
* Monitor planned expenditure and support effective cost control.
* Prepare technical objectives for each equipment item included in the turnaround.
* Establish monitoring requirements that demonstrate achievement of corporate objectives.
* Develop the process path and activity sequence for turnaround execution.
* Coordinate quality and HSE criteria with relevant functional focal points.
* Ensure execution requirements are communicated to vendors before field activities begin.
* Prepare the technical sections of turnaround-contracting documents.
* Develop complete service scopes for turnaround contracts.
* Coordinate with procurement and technical teams during contractor selection.
* Participate in the assessment and screening of technically capable bidders.
* Confirm that proposed contractors meet plant and bidding requirements.
* Supervise contractor activities during turnaround execution.
* Track progress against technical specifications, milestones, and approved plans.
* Report execution status, emerging risks, and areas requiring corrective action.
* Coordinate the project close-out process with engineering and contracting teams.
* Support contract closure, reconciliation, and final documentation.
* Monitor the implementation of actions arising from internal and external audits.
* Share relevant turnaround experience from other operating companies and the wider industry.
* Identify proven technologies and working practices that improve efficiency or quality.
* Initiate post-turnaround lessons-learned reviews.
* Track approved lessons-learned actions for inclusion in future turnaround plans.
Ideal Profile
Applicants should hold a degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical qualification.
A minimum of five years of professional experience is required, including at least two to three years working in technical projects or maintenance.
The successful candidate should understand plant turnaround preparation, equipment maintenance scopes, technical contracting, contractor evaluation, field-execution monitoring, HSE requirements, and project close-out. Strong planning, stakeholder coordination, risk awareness, reporting, and follow-up capabilities are essential. Applicable professional certifications will provide an advantage.
