Role Context
The Career Counsellor - University Guidance will support students in building realistic academic and career plans that reflect their strengths, personal goals, and future ambitions. The role connects school-based counselling with university admissions preparation, career exploration, parent communication, and student portfolio development. By implementing a structured career and university guidance program, the counsellor will help improve student confidence, strengthen post-secondary outcomes, and contribute to a progressive learning culture within Abu Dhabi’s school education sector.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide individual and group guidance to students on university options, career pathways, subject choices, academic goals, and future skills.
* Help students assess their interests, abilities, talents, personality traits, learning strengths, and long-term career aspirations.
* Implement the school’s career and university guidance policy so students receive consistent support for post-secondary education planning.
* Guide students from Cycle 2 onward in aligning subject choices, extracurricular activities, portfolios, and academic targets with future ambitions.
* Support students in identifying suitable local and international universities, colleges, specialist programs, scholarships, internships, and alternative pathways.
* Assist with university applications by managing documentation, reviewing personal statements, preparing recommendation letters, and tracking deadlines.
* Encourage students to submit suitable post-secondary applications based on their academic profile, career goals, and realistic pathway options.
* Engage parents throughout the guidance process and promote student agency in decision-making.
* Track student progress and provide tailored support to help learners meet academic goals and career planning milestones.
* Plan and coordinate career and university guidance events, admissions visits, workshops, fairs, information sessions, and key calendar activities.
* Build productive relationships with local post-secondary institutions, international admissions teams, alumni, and community partners.
* Provide targeted pathway support for gifted and talented students, including scholarship guidance, mentorship links, and specialized program exploration.
* Support students with additional learning needs by identifying accessible post-secondary routes, suitable support services, and alternative programs.
* Maintain accurate counselling records, application trackers, student portfolio notes, event schedules, and graduate destination data.
* Develop strong alumni connections and use pathway information to inspire current students and improve guidance planning.
* Participate in school duties, extracurricular activities, staff collaboration, and continuous professional development.
* Maintain high standards of confidentiality, safeguarding, professional conduct, and respectful communication with students and families.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s Degree or QFE Level 7 qualification in any subject.
* Meets continuous professional development expectations related to school counselling, career guidance, student support, or education.
* Current or former teacher, educator, counsellor, academic adviser, or university guidance professional will be well suited to the role.
* Minimum 2 years of experience in school counselling, career counselling, university guidance, student advising, or related counselling work.
* Strong understanding of student development, university admissions, career pathway planning, academic portfolios, and post-secondary applications.
* Able to guide students on how subject choices, extracurricular activities, personal strengths, and future ambitions connect to realistic opportunities.
* Skilled in reviewing personal statements, preparing recommendation letters, managing application deadlines, and maintaining accurate student records.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with students, parents, teachers, school leaders, alumni, and external education representatives.
* Strong organizational ability with the discipline to manage calendars, events, applications, documents, and student follow-up.
* High emotional maturity, patience, professional energy, and sound judgment when supporting students with varied academic and personal needs.
* Able to inspire trust, respect, confidence, and motivation among learners and families.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills for counselling documentation, parent engagement, and university correspondence.
* Committed to confidentiality, safeguarding, inclusion, child welfare, and professional standards in a school environment.
